It is an African ecoclimatic zone, the transition region between theSaharaDesert in the north and theSudanian Savannasin the south; and a biogeographicecoregionin theTropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublandsterrestrialbiome.
The Sahel covers parts of the territory (from west to east) of:Senegal,southernMauritania,Mali,Burkina Faso,southernAlgeria,Niger,northernNigeria,Chad,Sudan(Darfur and southern 'North Sudan'.), northernEthiopia,andEritrea.

Over the history of Africa the region has been home to theSahelian kingdoms,some of the most advanced kingdoms benefiting from trade across the Sahara desert.
