English:TheAustin 7 Box Saloonwas a version of theAustin 7saloon, also known as theR saloon."R" stands for "rag" as the original design had a fabric body, built from Wydoor fabricoid. The very first cars (early 1926) were contract-built by Gordon England, but in May 1926 the factory "R" saloons appeared with an aluminium body, while the factory-made "RF" had a fabric body. In late 1928 the design was updated to have wider doors, wrapping around the rear wheelarch, and the name changed toRKfor aluminium cars. The fabric cars remained RFs. In May 1930 the steel-bodiedRLreplaced the RK, while various other design changes were applied to the new fabric-bodiedRGas well. These cars have a longer and taller bonnet with louvres, with a correspondingly shortened scuttle. The scuttle was longer again for the finalRM/RHshort-wheelbase saloons.
