Founded in 1958, Fuzhou University is one of the key national universities selected forthe “Double First-Class Initiative,” a significant commitment by the Chinese government to enhance China’s higher education power and international competitiveness. It is also part of the “211 Project,” a government programme dedicated to supporting the rapid development of 100 selected universities in the 21st century.

As a university jointly established by the People’s Government of Fu gian Province and the Ministry of Education of China, Fuzhou University has evolved into a prominent comprehensive institution since its inception. Fu gianProvince and Fuzhou

Fu gian Phúc Kiến (meaning “Happy Establishment” ), on the south-eastern coast of China, is bordered by the provinces of Zhe gian g to the north, Jiangxi to the west, and Guangdong to the southwest. Facing Taiwan across the Straits, Fu gian is one of the closest mainland provinces to Southeast Asia and Oceania, as well as an important window and base of China for global exchanges. Its capital and largest city is Fuzhou Phúc Châu ( “Happy City” ), the city in which Fuzhou University is mainly based.

With a long tradition as a coastal port and shipbuilding centre, Fuzhou is the major coastal city between Hong Kong and Shanghai. As the central city of a province with many ethnic and linguistic links to Taiwan, Fuzhou has benefited from cross-strait investment and is one of the 200 most attractive cities in the world and the eco-city in China with the highest investment value.

Jasmine is the city flower and the banyan is the official city tree. Fuzhou, with its marvellous green cityscape that is full of parks and gardens, is also known as the “City of Banyans”Dung Thànhdue to the numerous banyan trees that have been planted there since the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
