So far, this year has seen thecontinuation of major armed conflicts,including theRussian invasion of Ukraine,theMyanmar civil war,theSudanese civil war,and theIslamist insurgency in the Sahel.

The ongoingIsrael–Hamas warhas led tospilloverinto numerous countries, most notably Lebanon, who Israelinvadedin October. This followed an intensification of theongoing conflictbetween Israel andHezbollah.In the preceding month, Israel ramped up its offensive against Hezbollah, including an attackusing explosives-laden communication devices,and carrying out abombing of Hezbollah’s headquarterswhich resulted in the killing ofSecretary-General of Hezbollah,Hassan Nasrallah.[1]The year also saw a rise in activity by theHouthi movementwhich has contributed to acrisisin theRed Seathat has impacted global shipping. The ongoing conflict has sparked widespreadprotests against the war.[2][3][4]

Approximately 79 countries, representing around four billion people, are expected to conduct national elections throughout the course of the year,[5][6][7][8]including eight out of ten of the world's most populous countries (Bangladesh,Brazil,Pakistan,Russia,India,Mexico,Indonesia,theUnited States)[5]as well asFranceand theUnited Kingdom.[9]TheEuropean Parliamentalso held elections.[10]
