Carolyn Pickles(born 8 February 1952) is a British actress fromWakefield,England,who has appeared inWest End theatreand on British television. She is known for playing DCI Kim Reid inThe BillandShelley WilliamsinEmmerdale.

Life and career

Pickles was born inWakefield.She lives inLondon.She is the daughter of theCircuit JudgeJames Pickles,a niece of actressChristina Pickles,and great-niece ofWilfred Pickles,the TV and radio personality.[1]Pickles grew up in and attended school inHalifaxin West Yorkshire[citation needed]and Bradford Girls' Grammar School. She read drama at theUniversity of Manchester,taking roles in a number of student productions includingNarrow Road to the Deep NorthbyEdward Bond,and the lead in Brecht'sMother Courage and Her Children.[citation needed]She joined theBBC'sRadio Drama Company.[2]

Pickles played the lead role as Miss Bluebell in theBBCseries of the same name, based on the career ofMargaret Kelly Leibovici,in 1986.[citation needed]She also appeared inThe Billfor two years as DCIKim Reid,as Simone Trevelyan inMay to Decemberand inThe Tales of Para Handyas Lady Catherine Ramsay. Pickles also appeared in the cult BBC children's educational drama seriesThrough The Dragon's Eye.She was a leading character (12 episodes in 1982) in the TV seriesWe'll Meet Again.Pickles has appeared in a number of films, includingRoman Polanski'sTess(1979),Agatha(1979) andThe Mirror Crack'd(1980).[3]In 1990, she appeared in an episode ofCasualty(Series 5 episode 8). In 1995 she played as Linda Livingstone inI Don't Speak EnglishwithPaolo Villaggio.Pickles appeared inHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1as the Muggle Studies teacher,Charity Burbage.In 2006 she played the part of Jane Templeton in the final episode of the first series ofLewisan ITV drama.

In 2011, Carolyn Pickles played Mrs Gulliver in Series 2 and 3 ofLand Girls.In 2013, Pickles played journalist Maggie Radcliffe in the ITV dramaBroadchurch.She appeared in all 3 series, from 2013–2017.[citation needed]

Since 2022, she has played Reverend Mother Adrian inSister Boniface Mysteriesin a recurring role. In October 2023, she appeared in an episode of the BBC soap operaDoctorsasJoyce Kilter.[4]
