Pidu District(Bì đô khu), formerly known asPi CountyorPixian[a],is adistrictof theCity of Chengdu,the capital ofSichuan,China. It presently covers an area of 437.5 square kilometers (168.9 sq mi), with a total population of 1,672,025 during the2020 census.[3]It was formerly known as the source of the besttobaccoin Sichuan and is now well known for itsdoubanjiang,a type of spicy fermented bean sauce.[4]It was established from the former Pi County by an approval from theState Councilon November 24, 2016.[5]

Pitong,the seat of Pidu, is located 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) from downtownChengdu.It covers an area of 437.5 square kilometers (168.9 sq mi).[6]

History

During theWarring States period,the area of the present Pidu belonged to theancient kingdom of Shu.In 314BC, it was conquered by thestate of Qin,which organized Pi County two years later in 312BC.[citation needed]

In the 19th century, the area was famed for the quality of itstobacco,reckoned the best inSichuan.[2]

It is now[when?]seeking to attract electronics and IT corporations and, in 2015, applied for elevation tourban districtstatus.[citation needed]
