The event was one of the criteria used to select the U.S. teams for the1985 World Championships.

editFollowing the retirement of Olympic gold medalistScott Hamilton,Brian Boitanolanded seven triple jumps in the free skating to capture his first national title.[1][2]Mark Cockerell,appearing in his ninth nationals, finished a career-best second, andChristopher Bowmanmoved up from eighth to fourth with an outstanding free skating.[3]
Boitano would go on to capture the bronze medal at the1985 World Championships.

editComing off a fourth-place finish at the1984 Winter Olympics,Tiffany Chinwas the heavy favorite and won all three phases of the competition to capture the crown.[4][5][6]Second place finisherDebi Thomasbecame the first black American singles skater to qualify for theWorld Figure Skating Championships.[7]
Chin would go on to win the bronze medal at the1985 World Championships,while Thomas finished fifth in her World debut.
