  • March 24, 1988:Graig Nettleswas purchased by the Expos from theAtlanta Braves.[6]
  • CFL quarterbackMatt Duniganretired from the Canadian Football League in 1988 and chased a childhood dream of professional baseball. Dunigan attended an open tryout with the Montreal Expos and was one of two players selected to sign a contract.[7]

The Expos heldspring trainingatWest Palm Beach Municipal StadiuminWest Palm Beach,Florida– a facility they shared with theAtlanta Braves.It was their 12th season at the stadium; they had conducted spring training there from1969to1972and since1981.

Expos pitcherPascual Pérezthrew a five-inning rain-shortened no-hitter against thePhillieson September 24, 1988. It was the first no-hitter inVeterans Stadiumhistory. Perez allowed one walk, and another Phillies baserunner reached on an error. UmpireHarry Wendelstedtwaved off the game after a 90-minute rain delay after the game was stopped by a steady rain with one out in the top of the sixth.[8]However, due to a statistical rule change in 1991, no-hittersmust last at least nine inningsto count. As a result of the retroactive application of the new rule, this game andthirty-five othersare no longer considered no-hitters.
