Akita Station is the northern terminus of theAkita Shinkansen,and is 127.3 kilometers fromMoriokaand 662.6 kilometers fromTokyo.The station is also the northern terminus of theUetsu Main Lineand is 298.7 kilometers from the starting point of that line atNiitsuand is also a station onŌu Main Line.Most trains on theOga Linecontinue past the nominal southern terminal of that line atOiwaketo terminate at Akita Station.

The station is an elevated station, consisting of fourisland platformsserving eight tracks for regular trains, and twobay platformsfor the Akita Shinkansen. The station has a "Midori no Madoguchi"staffed ticket office and a View Plaza travel agency.[1]

History

Akita Station opened on 21 October 1902.[2]The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. The station's building was renovated in 1997.
