Educated atLoretto School,Morton wascommissionedinto theRoyal Navyin 1941 during theSecond World War.[1]He became commanding officer of thefrigateHMSYarmouthas well as captain of the20th Frigate Squadronin 1964, Senior Naval OfficerNorthern Irelandin 1968 and Senior Naval Member at theRoyal College of Defence Studiesin 1971.[1]He went on to be Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Policy) in 1973 andFlag Officer First Flotillain 1975.[1]He was appointedVice-Chief of the Defence Staffin 1977 andVice Chief of the Naval Staffin 1978.[1]In 1980 he was appointedUK Military Representative to NATO;he retired in 1983.[1]

In retirement Morton becameKing of Arms of the Order of the British Empireas well asRear-Admiraland thenVice-Admiral of the United Kingdom.[1]He died in 2006 after a long illness.[2]
