Early life and education
editBeers is a 1975 graduate of theMilton Academy.[1]She went on to graduate fromWilliams Collegewhere she studiedtheaterandEnglish literature.Beers acted and performed comedy for several years inNew York Citybefore moving toLos Angelesto make the transition to producing.
Career
editWhile living in New York City, Beers was producer to the 1999 cult film 200 Cigarettes. The cult favorite had an all star cast that included Courtney Love, Guillermo Diaz, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci and Ben Affleck. 200 Cigarettes is also the first film to star Goldie Hawn's daughter, Kate Hudson (who played a very similar role to her real life mother).
Beers served as President of directorMike Newell’sDogstar Films, where she produced the films200 Cigarettes,starringBen Affleck,Dave Chappelle,andKate Hudson,andBest Laid Plans,starringReese Witherspoon.She also developed such films asHigh Fidelity,directed byStephen Frearsand starringJohn Cusack,as well asPushing Tin,starringBilly Bob Thornton,Cate Blanchett,andAngelina Jolie.She also served asExecutive Produceron the filmsSafe Passage,starringSusan Sarandon,andWitch Hunt,starringDennis Hopper,with producerGale Ann Hurd.
She then served as President of theMark Gordon Company.While there, she oversaw the development and production of its feature film and television projects, including the development ofGrey's Anatomy.Additionally, Ms. Beers produced the feature filmsThe Hoax,starringRichard Gere,andCasanova,starringHeath Ledger;both films were directed byLasse Hallström.
In 2009, Beers partnered withShonda Rhimes' production companyShondaLandto develop and produce additional feature film and television projects.
Beers serves on theMotion Picture & Television Fund(MPTF) Board of Governors.[2]
Recognition
editFor her work onGrey's Anatomy,Beers and her fellow producers were awarded the 2007 Producer of the Year Award from theProducers Guild of America,[3]the 2007Golden Globe Award[4]for Best Television Series Drama, and received the 2006 and 2007Emmynominations for Outstanding Drama Series.[5]Beers has been nominated three times by theProducers Guild of Americafor their Television Producer of the Year Award.
In 2014,Scandalwas awarded theAmerican Film Institute'sTelevision Program of the Year Award.[6]as well as aPeabody Award.[7]
