Chris Duarte (musician)

Chris Duarte(born February 16, 1963) is an Americanguitarist,singer,andsongwriter.Duarte plays a style of Texasblues-rockthat draws on elements ofjazz,blues,androck and roll.[1]In his own words, his musical style is a combination of "rockin' blues" and "punk blues."[2]He is signed toShrapnel Records.

Biography

Duarte was born inSan Antonio, Texas,[3]and was first inspired by music at age eight after seeingFiddler On The Roofon television. Duarte first began playing on his brother's guitar and then obtained his own electric guitar, a Supro, at the age of 14. In 1979, Duarte moved toAustin, Texas,and purchased a 1963Fender Stratocasterguitar for $500 and began exploring various genres including thejazzmusic ofJohn ColtraneandMiles Davis.This guitar he primarily used to learn to play, was stolen in 1993.[4]Duarte was inspired by blues legendStevie Ray Vaughan,[4]and creditsJohn Coltraneas his number-one musical idol.[4]

Duarte won alabelrecording contractwith Silvertone Records and releasedTexas Sugar/Strat Magikin 1994,[3]and was named "Best New Talent" inGuitar Player's 1995 Reader's Poll.[citation needed]He finished fourth in the magazine's "Best Blues Guitarist" category behindEric Clapton,Buddy GuyandB.B. King.[3]

Duarte said once in an interview, "I always thought I was a better live performer anyway."[4]Though Duarte has played a limited number ofUSdates in recent years with theJapaneseband Bluestone Company backing him, he performs primarily as apower triobilled as the Chris Duarte Group.[3]Originally formed with long-time friends and collaborators, John Jordan on bass and Jeff Hodges on drums, the current incarnation features Dustin Sargent on bass and John McKnight on drums.

Apart from his band, Duarte has performed with Julie Burrell, Diana Cantu,Bobby Mack,Tracy Conover,Indigenous,andOmar & the Howlers.

Duarte's concert dates inAsheville, North Carolina;Charlotte, North Carolina;andGreenville, South Carolina;were filmed for thePBStelevision show,The PBS Project,and featured Steve Bailey on bass andJeff Sipeon drums.

His thirteenth album,Lucky 13,is billed as a Chris Duarte Group release, featuring Dustin Sargent on the bass, and John McKnight on the drums, while Duarte plays the guitar and provides vocals.[5]Following its release in 2014, it received positive reviews for its blend of slow, loping blues withpsychedelic,rock andjazzovertones.[6]
