Early life
editDempsey was born inMount Isa[1]and hasIndigenous Australianheritage and his ancestry can be traced to theKalkadoon,a tribe fromQueensland's South/Central West region.[2]
Dempsey's first sport wasrugby leaguewhich he played as a junior before trying Aussie Rules inCairns.[1]
He played with the Manunda Hawks in theAFL Cairnscompetition. He later moved toBrisbaneto play with theKenmore Bearsjunior football club while also playing for his schoolBrisbane Boys' College.[3]
AFL career
editDempsey's professional footballing career has been dogged by injuries. In 2008 he suffered a leg stress fracture[4]and in 2011 he tore his kneeanterior cruciate ligament(ACL) in round four and needed a knee reconstruction.[5]
In May 2013, he was suspended from the main playing group for breaching team rules, and was forced to train with theVFLteam.[6]In August, he tore his hamstring tendon[7]and missed the remainder of the season.
At the conclusion of the 2016 season, he was delisted by Essendon.[8]
