Dino Morea

Dino Morea(born 9 December 1975) is an Indian actor and former model, who has also appeared in severalHindi,Tamil,Kannada,MalayalamandTelugufilms.[3][4][5]Morea initially established himself as a fashion model before making his film debut in the 1999 filmPyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi.He had his biggest commercial success in the horror filmRaazin 2002.[6]He starred in films such asGunaah(2002),Plan(2004),Holiday(2006),Dus Kahaniyaan(2007),Bhram(2008) andAcid Factory(2009). After consecutive commercial failures, he made sporadic appearances in film during the 2010s.[7]

Early life and background

Dino Morea was born inBangaloreto anItalianfather and an Indian mother.[8][2]His mother hails fromKalamasseryinKochi,Kerala.[9]He spent the first 11 years of his life inItaly.[10]He is the second of three brothers: Nicolo Morea is his older brother and Santino Morea his younger brother.[2][11]He initially attendedBangalore Military School,graduated fromSt. Joseph's Collegein Bangalore and also went toClarence High School.He was noticed while modelling for a fashion company and soon received his first film offer.[2]

He started his career as a model for various fashion companies. In 1995, he won theGladrags Manhunt Contestand went to the Singapore forManhunt International,where he won second place.[12]He won theGladrags supermodel contestin 1999.[13]

Acting career

1998-2002: Early work and breakthrough

Morea made his acting debut in the TV seriesCaptain Vyom,where he appeared as "Sonic". His movie debut was inPyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi,oppositeRinke Khanna,which was a moving romantic movie among the teens. The movie earned him a nomination forZee Cine Award for Best Male Debut,but the award was won byMukesh TiwariforChina Gate.[14]

He had his breakthrough role inRajiv Menon'sTamilfilmKandukondain Kandukondain,which adaptsJane Austen's novelSense and Sensibility.[15]

In 2002, Morea starred in the year's most successful horror thriller,Raaz.[16]Directed byVikram Bhatt,it established Morea in the Hindi film industry. His portrayal of Aditya Dhanraj received positive reviews from the critics.Shah Rukh Khanpraised Morea's performance and said "Your film is really doing well".[17]He won aZee Cine Awardin the category of Dynamic Duo withBipasha Basu.Raazwas both a commercial and critical success, and served as the best film of his career.[18]

Amol Shetge's 2002 thrillerGunaahwas a flop, but Morea was praised for his performance.[19][11]

2003-2019: Decline

Following the success ofRaaz,Morea worked in consecutive box office failures for the rest of the decade with the exception ofAksarandTom Dick and Harry(both 2006) having been moderate successes.[20]

Morea performed the lead role in three 2003 films. He starred in thepsychologicalthrillerBaaz: A Bird in Danger,which was produced by Tinu Verma.[21]His next release wasChal:The Game of Death.Later that year, he starred in the horror thrillerSssshhh...,for which he was nominated for theSuperstar of Tomorrow – Male.[22]

In 2004, he starred in four films. The first wasIshq Hai Tumsedirected byG. Krishna,which was a remake of the Telugu filmSampangi.[23]Later he featured inSanjay Gupta'saction thrillerPlan,in which his performance was praised by audiences.[24]He next appeared inaction dramaInsaaf: The JusticeoppositeNamrata Shirodkar.His portrayal of IPS officer Abhimanyu Singh was generally well received.[25]He then appeared as Sunny Trehan inMahesh V Manjrekar'ssupernatural horrorfilmRakt.He teamed up withBipasha Basu,Sanjay Dutt,Suniel Shetty,Amrita AroraandNeha Dhupiain the film.[26]His performance was appreciated by critics, with Shruti Bashin from Planet Bollywood praising his performance.[27]Rediff.comstated that, "Dino as abusive husband has done a good job".[28]

His only film in 2005 wasChehraa,directed bySaurabh Shukla.Co-starring alongsideBipasha Basu,Preeti Jhangiani,andIrrfan Khan,he played Akash Mehta, a medical student.[29]

His first film in 2006 wasAnant Mahadevan's thrillerAksarwithUdita GoswamiandEmraan Hashmi.The film was a profitable production,[30]but met with negative reviews from critics. He then appeared inPooja Bhatt'sromanticdancefilmHoliday,which is a remake of the 1987 American filmDirty Dancing.[31]The following year, Morea featured inSohail Khan's period action-dramaFight Club – Members Onlywith an ensemble cast that includedSuniel Shetty,Zayed Khan,Sohail Khan,andRitesh Deshmukh.The picture, which depicted the rise of organised crime inMumbai,saw Morea play Karan Chopra as a gangster. For his performance, Morea earned positive reviews from critics.[32]His next release that year,Tom, Dick, and Harrywas directed byDeepak Tijori.The screenplay combines the plots of two different films with similar titles: the 1941 American classicTom, Dick and Harryand the 1993 Hong Kong hitTom, Dick and Hairy.[33][34]The following year he made hisKannadadebut withJulieoppositeRamya.It was a remake of the1975 Hindi-language film,but it failed to attract audiences.[35]Morea's final film release that year wasDharmesh Darshan's romantic comedyAap Ki KhatiralongsidePriyanka Chopra,Ameesha PatelandAkshaye Khanna.It proved to be one of the year's biggest flops.[36][37]

He had four releases in 2007, all of which drew mixed reviews. His first film of the year,Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee,failed at the box office. He depicted Rajeev Arora, an aspiringCEOwho is eager to become a billionaire.[38] That year, he also made a special appearance inFarah Khan's filmOm Shanti Om,performing in the song "Deewangi Deewangi" withMalaika AroraandSalman Khan.[39] He was featured in a segment of the anthology filmDus Kahaniyaan.[40]His final release of the year wasDeha.

In 2008, he appeared in nine films. His first release was thesuspense thrillerBhram,in which Morea appeared as Shantanu Rawal, a supermodel.[41]He then appeared inAnant Mahadevan's unreleased filmMeeting Se Meeting Tak.[42] [43]

Pyaar Impossible!(2010) marked his last major film role until 2017'sSolo.He was a contestant on the reality showKhatron Ke Khiladiin 2010.[44]In 2012, he produced the erotic filmJism 2(2012) which starred former pornstarSunny Leonein her film debut and turned out to be a success.[45]He made cameo appearances inHappy New Year(2014) andAlone(2015).

2020-present: Streaming ventures

He returned to film production in 2021 when he co-producedHelmet.Since the beginning of 2020s, Morea has worked in filmsAgentandBandra(both 2023). He had supporting roles in various web series.Mentalhood(2020) andKaun Banegi Shikharwati(2022) onZee5,Hostages(2020) andThe Empire(2021) onHotstar,Tandav(2021) onAmazon Prime Video,andRana Naidu(2024) onNetflix.He won theIndian Television Academy Awardfor Best Supporting Actor Drama OTT forEmpire.

In addition to acting, Morea is afootballandbasketballenthusiast who supports charities and organisations. Morea andLara Duttatraveled to watch theLos Angeles Lakersin action, and on 8 April 2009, saw theNBAinaugurate a refurbished basketball court in a Mumbai suburb.[46]In 2022, he attended theFIFA World Cup finalin Qatar.[47]

He is the captain andmidfielderof the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity football club that raises money for charity. In March 2013, he played a game to raise funds for the Magic Funds Organisation, anNGOfor underprivileged children.[48][49] In 2016, he officially joinedPet Fedas he was on board as an investor.[50][51][52][53]

Morea has also been engaged as a brand ambassador to represent sport leagues, charity organizations, and Indian states. Morea is a frequent stage performer and has participated in several world tours and concerts. In 2010, he teamed up withPriyanka Chopraand performed a concert inSuva,Fiji.[69]Along withShah Rukh Khan,Rani Mukherjee,andDia Mirza,he performed in theAirtel-Bindass concertin 2011. In 2014, he performed withSnoop DogginPune.[70]

Business

Morea is a successful businessman in India.[71] In 2012, along with cricketerMS Dhoni,he launched a merchandising company calledCool Maal.[72]In 2013, he launched his own production company calledClockwise Films.[73]In 2019, Morea along withKetan Kadamjointly received the "Innovative Business Award" fromPeople for the Ethical Treatment of Animalsfor abusiness venturethat would replacehorse-drawn carriagesfor tourists in Mumbai with battery-powered electric carriages.[74][75][76] Along withNandita Mahtani,he runs a company calledPlayground.[77]

In 2013, he started severalfitness stationsinWadalaandBandra.These were inaugurated byHrithik RoshanandAditya Thackeray.[78]

He is co-founder ofThe Fresh Pressand board director ofGruhas Collective Consumer Fund(GCCF).[79][80][81][82][83]

Morea resides in Casa-morea,Bandra,Mumbai. He is a fitness enthusiast who maintains a strict regimen.[84][85]He is aRoman Catholic.[86][87]He is fluent inEnglish,Hindi,Italian,Urdu,Kannada,FrenchandPortuguese.[88]

Relationship

In 1996, he began datingBipasha Basu.[89]They were featured in many films together. They also worked in many modelling assignments together.[90]In 1998, an ad for the Swiss undergarment manufacturerCalidawhich featured both of them caused controversy because it showed him biting her underwear. It was eventually taken down.[91]He broke up with Bipasha Basu after the release of their successful 2003 filmRaaz.[92]

He briefly datedLara Duttafrom 2008 to 2009.[93][94]Later, he datedNandita Mahtanifrom 2010 to 2017.[95]
