Early life
editElisa Toffoli was born on 19 December 1977, inTriestein north-eastern Italy. She grew up inMonfalcone(27 km fromTrieste,17 km fromGorizia,5 km fromSlovenia,80 km from Austria). Living in a border area, where she had the opportunity to listen to different languages and experience various cultures, was important for Elisa's later inspirations and helped her develop the ability to sing in multiple languages. Her early influences includeBjörk,PJ Harvey,Tori Amos,Aretha FranklinandElla Fitzgerald,[6]and she has creditedRudyard KiplingandJim MorrisonofThe Doorsas lyrical inspirators.[7]She began writing songs at the age of 11 and later played in several local bands. At 15 she appeared in a karaoke TV program,Karaokehosted byRosario Fiorello.

editAt 16, Elisa metCaterina Caselli,who one year later signed her to the record companySugar Music.At 18 she left forBerkeley, California(US) to work on songs for her debut album with record producerCorrado Rustici,who has also worked withWhitney Houston,Aretha Franklin andZuccheroamong others.
Elisa's first single "Sleeping in Your Hand"was released in late May 1997, followed by her debut albumPipes & Flowerson 22 September of the same year. She was credited as a writer or co-writer on all tracks. The album soon went quadrupleplatinumin Italy and won her two prizes:Targa TencoandPIM(Premio Italiano della Musica). She was also a special guest onEros Ramazzotti's European tour. In 1998, the re-release ofPipes and Flowersincluded a new track,Cure Me,recorded in Venice with British producerDarren Allison(Spiritualized,Belle and Sebastian).[8]
5 May 2000 saw the release ofAsile's World(AsilebeingElisawritten backwards). The album took a new turn in terms of musical influences and featured songs produced byHowie B,Roberto Vernetti,Mauro MalavasiandLeo Z.
In September 2000 Elisa recorded her first song in Italian, "Luce (Tramonti a nord est)".The song was initially written in English, but an Italian lyric was written in collaboration with fellow singer Zucchero. The song was performed at the 2001Sanremo Festivalsupported by the Solis String Quartet, and won her theCritics' Award,Interpreter of the Yearas well as the competition altogether. Both Italian and English versions were later included in a re-release ofAsile's World.In November she was awarded three prizes at theItalian Music Awards:Best Female Artist,Best Single(Luce) andBest Song,as well as taking home theBest Italian Artistat the2001 MTV Europe Music Awardsin Frankfurt. She also received Premio Italiano della Musica'sBest Female ArtistandBest Single(Luce).
Elisa's third album,Then Comes the Sunwas released on 9 November 2001, with Rustici returning as producer. The album saw a return to a more pop/rock sound and went triple platinum. The following year she performed both at the closing of the2002 Winter OlympicsinSalt Lake City,Utah, singing a jazzy version of the Italian national hymn, and at the 2002Pavarotti and Friendsconcert, singingVoglio vivere così (col sole in fronte)with the world-famoustenor.
In August 2002, Sugar Music released an international album simply titledElisa.The album is a selection of songs from her first three albums fronted byCome Speak to Me,the original English version of her hitLuce.The single received high rotation onMTV Europeas well as fair airplay and moderate attention in several European countries, but still failed to establish Elisa as an international artist.
In late 2003, Elisa released the albumLotus,an acoustic album featuring new, stripped-down versions of some of her songs as well as a handful of new ones, including a cover version ofLeonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".The album was followed by an extensive acoustic Italian tour as well as a double DVD set consisting of anMTV Supersonicconcert andThe making of Lotus.
Elisa's fourth studio albumPearl Dayswas released on 15 October 2004. All tracks were produced byGlen Ballard,known for producingAlanis Morissette'sJagged Little Pilland tracks for artists such asAnastacia,Michael Jackson,Shakira,Christina AguileraandThe Corrs.The album was more rock influenced and sported more electric guitars than her earlier records. One of the songs,Life Goes On,was later translated to Italian (Una poesia anche per te) and became the fourth best-selling single in Italy in 2005. The single was accompanied by a self-directed video which won thePremio Video ItalianoforBest Female Artist.In the summer of 2005, Elisa appeared at theLive 8concert in Rome alongsideZucchero,Luciano Ligabueand other major Italian artists.
Two non-album singles were released in 2005 and 2006,SwanandTeach Me Again(duet withTina Turner). Both supported major Italian films, namelyMelissa P.andAll the Invisible Children(Segment 9:Song Song & Little Catdirected byJohn Woo). Elisa also performedLuce (Tramonti a nord est)at theclosing ceremonyof the2006 Winter OlympicsinTorino.
On 17 November 2006Soundtrack '96-'06was released, a collection of hits from her first ten years as a recording artist. The album also contained four new songs; three in Italian and one in English. The album peaked at number 1, was certified diamond and became the third best-selling album of 2006 in Italy, with more than 700,000 copies sold. A revised edition titledCaterpillarwas released in September 2007, aimed at the international market. Several of the songs had been remixed, rearranged and partly rerecorded, and it featured an entirely new cover version ofThe Rolling Stones' songWild Horses.The box setSoundtrack Live '96-'06was released on 23 November 2007, containing a CD and DVD from aMilanconcert during the 2007Soundtrack Live Tour.
In the wake of Elisa's increased popularity due to her songDancingappearing onSo You Think You Can Dance,yet another compilation album appropriately namedDancingwas released in the US on 15 July 2008. Being the singer's first album available in the US, it is recognised as her American debut.
Elisa released her next album,Heart,on 13 November 2009. The first single wasTi vorrei sollevare,withGiuliano Sangiorgifrom Italian rock bandNegramaro.The album also contains a collaboration withAntony HegartyfromAntony and the Johnsonson the song "Forgiveness". On 30 November 2010, Elisa releasedIvy,an album in the same vein as Lotus, featuring three new tracks, acoustic versions of her past songs and covers such as"1979"by theSmashing Pumpkins.The album sold over 80,000 copies in Italy and was further supported by a tour. In the same year Elisa collaborated with music producer / musicianGaudifor the track "Brainwashed Again", included on his album "No Prisoners".
2012–2016:L'anima vola,Onand new projects
editIn 2012, the song "Love Is Requited",written byAndrea Guerraand Michele von Buren for the soundtrack ofRoberto Faenza's filmSomeday This Pain Will Be Useful to Youand performed by Elisa, received aNastro d'Argentofor Best Original Song.[9]On 18 December 2012, her collaboration withEnnio Morricone,"Ancora qui",was featured inQuentin Tarantino's film,Django Unchainedand on itssoundtrack album.
On 15 October 2013,L'anima vola,Elisa's first album recorded entirely in Italian, was released. In early August, the album was certified double platinum by theFederation of the Italian Music Industry.[10]Elisa was featured on a special version of "We Are Incurable Romantics" byBelgiansingerOzark Henry,which was released in the Italian iTunes store on 15 July 2014.[11]
In 2015, Elisa was the coach and artistic director of the blue team in the talent showAmici di Maria De Filippi.[12]Her team won the singer category with the bandThe Kolors,with whom she collaborated on their second studio albumOut.[13]Elisa also returned to the role in the following two seasons, coachingElodie Di Patrizi,RikiandFederica Carta.[14][15]
On 15 January 2016, "No Hero"was released as the lead single from Elisa ninth studio album,On,marking a comeback to the English language for the artist.[16]The song debuted at number eight on the Italian Singles Charts and received triple Platinum certifications from FIMI. The album was recorded in English with two Italian-language tracks, "Bruciare per te" and a collaboration called "Sorrido già" with Emma Marrone andGiuliano Sangiorgi.[17]It debuted at number one on the FIMI Albums Chart, becoming the singer-songwriter's fourth album to top the chart.[18]Two additional singles came from this album: "Love me forever" and "Bruciare per te". Between November and December 2016, Elisa began touring in Italy, theUnited KingdomandIreland.[19][20]
2017–2019: Label change,Diari apertiandThe Lion King
editIn 2017, Elisa ended her deal with Sugar Music and signed withUniversal Music Groupunder the labelIsland Records.[21]The same year, Elisa celebrated 20 year anniversary of her career with the Together Here We Are event, which consisted of four concerts at the Verona Arena.[22]The live event was anticipated by the last record project with Sugar Music of the greatest hitsSoundtrack '97-'17,which debuted at number four on the Italian Album Charts.[23]On 22 September 2017, "Ogni istante" was released as Elisa's first single with Universal Music.[24]The profits from the single were donated to municipalities in central Italy affected by theearthquakes in 2016and2017.
Elisa released her tenth studio albumDiari apertithroughUniversal Music Groupon 26 October 2018, which debuted at number two on the Italian Albums Chart.[25]The album's lead single, "Se piovesse il tuo nome",peaked at number four on the FIMI Italian chart and at number one on the Italian Airplay Chart for nine weeks.[26]In January 2019, Elisa released the album's second single, "Anche fragile", singing it at theSanremo Music Festival 2019where she appeared as a special guest.[27]In May 2019, "Vivere tutte le vite" featuring rapperCarl Bravewas released as the album's third single.[28]The following 17 September she published the fifth single "Tua per sempre".[29]The singer announced that an expanded version of the album,Diari aperti (Segreti Svelati),would be released on 15 November 2019 with a total of 21 tracks stemming from the tenth albumDiari Apertiand the EnglishEPSecret Diaries.[30]album featured collaborations withCarmen Consoli,Brunori SasandRkomi.The lead single of the expanded album, in collaboration with Rkomi, was "Blu Part II", published on 8 November 2019.[6]
In 2019, Elisa was chosen byWalt Disney Animation Studiosto dub the voice ofNalain the animated filmThe Lion King,premiering in Italy on 21 August 2019. Nala is voiced by pop-starBeyoncéin the original. Elisa also sung the Italian version of "Spirit"and"Can You Feel the Love Tonight"withMarco Mengoni,who voicedSimba.[31]In 2019, Elisa was also involved in several collaborations, including "Blu" with Rkomi,[32]theImagine Dragons's song "Birds"(the fifth single from their fourth albumOrigins),[33]and on the albumNote di viaggio – Capitolo 1: venite avanti...byFrancesco GucciniandMauro Pagani,where the singer reinterpreted the song "Auschwitz".[34]
2020–present:Ritorno al futuro/Back to the Future,Sanremo Festival and collaborations
editOn 6 March 2020,Marracashreleased a new single "Neon – Le ali",from the albumPersona,featuring Elisa, which peaked at number five on the Italian Singles Chart.[35]On 10 April 2020, Elisa published the collaboration "Andrà tutto bene" with Tommaso Paradiso, written during thequarantinedue to theCOVID-19 pandemic in Italy.[36]On 20 November 2020, Luciano Ligabue published a collaboration with Elisa "Volente o nolente", the second extract from his album7.[37]In December 2021, Elisa performed the song "Alice!", the title track of the eponymous show written and directed bySimone Ferrariand Lulu Helbaek.[38][39]"Alice!" was composed byJohn Metcalfe,a composer for U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Blur. In 2021, Elisa announced on social networks that she was working on her eleventh studio album. In the same year, she was also featured onMahmood's single "Rubini"from the rapper's albumGhettolimpo.[9]
On 24 November 2021, the single "Seta" was released in anticipation of Elisa's eleventh album,Ritorno al futuro/Back to the Future.The album, which is a double record with songs in Italian on the first record and in English on the second,[40]was released on 18 February 2022, and became Elisa's fifth number-one album on the Italian Albums Chart.[41]It featured the single "O forse sei tu",performed by the singer during the2022 Sanremo Music Festival,where it took second place in the final ranking and was recognized with the "Giancarlo Bigazzi" award for best musical composition.[42][43]On 6 May 2022, Elisa released "Litoranea"as the third single from the album,[44]followed by a collaboration track "Palla al centro" withJovanotti.[45]
From 28 June to 24 September 2022, Elisa embarked on the environmentally friendly Back to the Future Live Tour in Italy,[46]which was followed by an eight-date European tour.[47]The recordings of the three opening concerts, held at theVerona Arena,were used for the live albumBack to the Future Live.[48]On 16 December 2022, "Come te nessuno mai" was released as the album's fifth single. Between December 2022 and January 2023, Elisa performed An Intimate Night, a theatre tour that featured the artistic direction ofDardust.[49]
Throughout 2022, Elisa wrote and composed two songs for Italian singer Elodie: "Bagno a mezzanotte"[50]and an original song "Proiettili (Ti mangio il cuore)" for the soundtrack of the filmBurning Hearts,directed by Pippo Mezzapesa.[51]The latter won theDavid di Donatello award for Best Original songand was nominated in the same category at theNastro d'Argento.[52]She was also featured on a bilingual version ofMuse's song "Ghosts (How Can I Move On)",released on 25 November 2022.
In 2023, Elisa had a guest appearance at the2023 Sanremo Music Festival,performing withGiorgia.The duo performed a mash up of Elisa's song "Luce (Tramonti a nord est)"and Giorgia's"Di sole e d'azzurro".Throughout 2023, she collaborated withNegramaroandJovanottion the single "Diamanti",[53]and withLa Rappresentante di Listaon Zef & Marz's debout single "Tilt".[54]On 24 November 2023, Elisa published the single "Quando nevica"form her compilation albumIntimate - Recording at Abbey Road Studios,recorded withDardustat theAbbey Road StudiosinLondon.[55][56]
In November 2024 she published the single "Dillo solo al buio"and she was featured as sognwriter and producer onCesare Cremonini's eight studio albumAlaska Baby.[57][58]
Personal life
editElisa andAndrea Rigonat(guitarist and band member) had their first child on 22 October 2009. Their son was born on 20 May 2013.[59]They married inGradoon 5 September 2015.
Philanthropy
editIn 2017, Elisa donated the profits from the single "Ogni istante" to municipalities in central Italy affected by theearthquakes in 2016and2017.
