Euros Lyn(Welsh pronunciation:[ˈɛɨ̯.rɔsˈlɪn];born 1971) is a Welshfilmandtelevision director,best known for his work inDoctor Who,Sherlock,Black Mirror,Daredevil,His Dark MaterialsandHeartstopper.

Early life

Lyn was born in Cardiff. His family moved to north Wales and later back south toSwansea.He was educated atYsgol Gyfun Ystalyferaand studied Drama at theUniversity of Manchester.

Lyn started his career directing Welsh-language programmes broadcast onS4C,such asPam Fi Duw?,Iechyd DaandY Glas.

He directed nine episodes ofDoctor Whoand won theBAFTA Cymruaward for Best Director for "Silence in the Library"and the 2007Hugo AwardforBest Dramatic Presentation, Short Formfor "The Girl in the Fireplace".He also directedDavid Tennant's(first)last episodesofDoctor Who.

In 2007, he directed the pilot ofGeorge Gently,based on theInspector Gentlynovels byAlan Hunter,forBBC One.He has also directed four episodes of the long-running BBC medical dramaCasualty.

In 2008, he directedChildren of Earth,the five-episodeTorchwoodmini-series (often called series 3 of the show).[1]

Lyn won theBAFTA Cymrufor Best Director three times, most recently for the first series ofSherlockwithBenedict CumberbatchandMartin Freeman,which also won RTS and BAFTA Best Drama awards. He also directedFifteen Million Merits,an episode of theanthology seriesBlack MirrorforChannel 4,which won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series. In 2013 he directed three episodes ofBroadchurchwithDavid TennantandOlivia Colman,and a further three episodes of the second instalment ofBAFTA-winning seriesLast Tango in Halifax,after directing three episodes of the first series.

The crime seriesHappy Valley,which Lyn directed, was shown on BBC One in 2014. In 2015 the show won the BAFTA award for Best Drama Series. He also directed episodes ofGracepoint(FOX USA),Cucumber(Channel 4) andDaredevil(Netflix USA).

In 2015 Lyn received the Siân Phillips Award at the BAFTA Cymru ceremony for his contributions to the industry.[2]In the same year, he directed the three-part BBC seriesCapitalbased on John Lanchester'snovel of the same name.[3]

In 2016 Lyn directed his first feature film, the Welsh-languageY Llyfrgell[cy],which was released with English subtitles asThe Library Suicidesand was based onFflur Dafydd's bookY Llyfrgell.The film starred Ryland Teifi,Catrin Stewart,Dyfan DwyforandSharon Haf Morgan.[4]
