Baron Fredrikvon Essen(30 July 1831 – 3 October 1921) was aSwedishpolitician,friherre,Marshal of the Realmand lord ofKavlås Castle.

Von Essen was member of the House of knights and nobility in theRiksdag of the Estates1862–1863 and 1865–1866, and member of theRiksdag's first chamber (Första kammaren) 1867–1874 and 1877–1906. He becamefinance ministerin 1888, serving underPrime MinisterGillis BildtandGustaf Åkerhielm(1889–1891) andErik Gustaf Boströmuntil 1894. In 1894 he was appointedMarshal of the RealmbyKing Oscar IIand served until 1911. He was chairman of the Executive Committee for the Swedish Iron-Clad Fellowship.

Fredrik von Essen was the son ofmajor generalFredrik Ulrikvon Essenand Anna Sofia Gyllenhaal, and a second cousin of Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal, ancestor of the American branch of theGyllenhaal familyand great grandfather ofJake Gyllenhaal.[1]He married Ebba Aurora Brahe (1838–1924), daughter ofCountNils FredrikBrahe(1812–1850) andCountessHedvig Elisabet Maria AmaliaPiper,atSkokloster Castle14 July 1859. Their children Vera Anna Elisabet (born 1860), Ebba Margareta (born 1866), Carl Magnus (born 1873), andWilhelm(born 1879).[2]
