George Bedford Daniel[1]was born inBrussels,Belgium, and grew up inSeattle,Washington, US.[2]He was first inspired by the airiness ofFleetwood Mac's works.[3]He later moved to England and enrolled atWilmslow High School.[4]In 2002, he joinedthe 1975as drummer, replacingMatty Healy,[5]who had been promoted to lead singer, replacing futureEditorskeyboardistElliott Williams.[6]At the time, the band madeemomusic and used the name Drive Like I Do.[7]Having takenmusic technologyatGCSE,Daniel left school at sixteen[3]and studiedelectronic musicat a Manchester college. While there, his tutors introduced him to works byAphex Twin,Luke Vibert,Squarepusher, andBoards of Canada,[7]and Daniel would regularly use the studio at college to work on the band's wares, even going so far as to submit 1975 content as coursework.[3]To keep the band together, Daniel and bandmates Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald went to university inManchester, during which time all four members worked as delivery drivers for a Chinese restaurant.[8]

By 2010, the band was being managed byJamie Oborne. After finding that labels were not interested, Oborne set upDirty Hit,and signed the band for£20.[9]On that label, the 1975 released fourextended plays (Facedownin August 2012,Sexin November 2012,Music for Carsin March 2013 andIVin May 2013),[10]theUK Albums Chart-topping albumsThe 1975(2013),I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It(2016),A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships(2018),Notes on a Conditional Form(2020) andBeing Funny in a Foreign Language(2022), and multiple singles including "Give Yourself a Try"and"Love It If We Made It".[11]Their second and third albums were nominated for theMercury Prize,[a]with the latter winning aBrit Award for British Album of the Yearin2019,[14]while "Give Yourself a Try" was nominated for aGrammy Award for Best Rock Songin 2020[15]and "Love It If We Made It" won anIvor Novello Awardfor Best Contemporary Song.[16]With Healy, Daniel was jointly nominated for Songwriter of the Year at the 2023 Ivor Novello Awards,[17]and with the 1975, Daniel is joint recipient of2017'sBrit Award for British Group,[18]2019'sGQBand of the Year award at theGQMen of the Year Awards[19]and Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year,[16]2020'sNMEBand Of The Decade Award, Best British Band andNMEInnovation Award at that year'sNMEawards,[20]and 2023'sBrit Award for British Rock/Alternative Act.[21]

In May 2016, Daniel broke his shoulder after slipping off their tour bus. He was temporarily replaced bythe Japanese House's drummer Freddy Sheed, whom he later congratulated for learning their entire set in less than 24 hours.[22]The band toured theirMusic for Carstour between 2018 and March 2020, when theCOVID-19 pandemicended it early.[23]Daniel spentlockdownpracticing hisdeejayingskills.[7]At the 2019GQAwards, he was photographed withCharli XCX,[19]who announced their relationship in May 2022;[24]her 2024 track "Talk Talk"was about an incident at the 2020NMEAwards in which XCX, who had been talking to Daniel online but had not yet met him in person, almost followed him into a toilet but stopped short of introducing herself.[20]Both XCX and the 1975 featured on "Spinning",a UK No. 94 single forNo Rome,[25]which they had worked on at that year'sSt Jerome's Laneway Festivalin 2020.[26]XCX announced their engagement in November 2023[27]in a selfie uploaded to her private Instagram account in which she flaunted a diamond ring. The 1975's fifth album was delayed by the band hitting a wall as a result of Daniel's depression and Healy's breakup withFKA Twigs.[8]The band resumed touring in March 2022 and later mounted theAt Their Very BestandStill... At Their Very Besttours;[29]Daniel spent post-pandemic 1975 afterparties deejaying.[7]After a gig atFinsbury Park,[7]which took place on 2 July 2023 and saw Healy apologise for multiple personal indiscretions,[30]Dirty Hit's general manager suggested mounting a Dirty Hit club night, prompting a suggestion that the label launch an imprint. At the time, XCX's managers had just began managingKelly Lee Owens, who Daniel had been wanting to collaborate with for some years.[7]Later that month, comments made by Healy atMalaysia'sGood Vibes Festivalgot the festival cancelled two days early,[31]prompting its organiser to sue the band's individual members for restitution.[32]Healy later stated in a September 2023 concert inSacramentothat the band would go on "indefinite hiatus" after finishing their booked run of concerts; at the time, their last scheduled gig was in March 2024.[33]

Daniel later signed Owens to Dh2, which launched in July 2024 with her single "Love You Got" and with a party at Phonox inBrixton.[7]The party involved performances from the imprint's first signing Kelly Lee Owens and from DJs Oscar Farrell andTimFromTheHouse. The following month, he released "Screen Cleaner", a glitchy three-minute-30-seconddancetrack cowritten by both its vocalistTove Lo[b]and TimFromTheHouse.[34]The track had previously been performed at various events including appearances with XCX atGlastonbury Festival,Boiler RoomNew York,AmnesiainIbiza, and Venue MOT withJamie xxin London.[36]Remixes were later released by Farrell[37]and Kelbin.[36]In November 2024, Daniel released a further track, "Chlorine", which combinedambient musicandtechno.[38]A further track, February 2025's "Volc3", featured Farrell.[39]
