Geva Kate MentorCBE(born 17 September 1984) is a formerEngland netball international.She has competed forEnglandin six Commonwealth Games. She was a member of the England team that won the gold medal at the2018 Commonwealth Games.She was also a member of the England teams that won the bronze medal at the2006and2010 Commonwealth Gamesand at the2011,2015and2019 Netball World Cups.She captained England at the2015 Netball World Cup.

Mentor was a member of theTeam Bathteams that won the2005–06and2006–07 Netball Superleaguetitles. In2008she began playing in theANZ Championship,winningpremiershipswith the2010 Adelaide Thunderbirdsand the2014 Melbourne Vixens.She captained theSunshine Coast Lightningteams that won the2017and2018 Suncorp Super Netballtitles. Since2019,Mentor has captainedCollingwood MagpiesinSuncorp Super Netball.
At theBirmingham 2022 Commonwealth Gamesshe read the Athletes Oath during the Opening Ceremony. In2019she was appointed aCommander of the Order of the British Empirefor her services tonetball.
Early life, family and education
editMentor was born and raised inBournemouth.She is daughter of Greg and Yvonne Mentor and she has a brother, Raoul. Her mother's family lived in theDorsetarea for five generations. Her father was originally fromSaint Lucia.[1][4][5]She grew up inBoscombeand attendedSt Peter's Catholic School.She studied for herA-Levelsat theUniversity of Bath's Centre of Excellence.[6][7][8][9]Since 2016, Mentor has studied for a Bachelor for Education with theSwinburne University of Technology.[6]
Playing career
editTeam Bath
editBetween 2001 and 2007, Mentor played forTeam Bath,initially in theSuper Cupand later in theNetball Superleague.In 2004 she was a member of the Team Bath squad that won the Super Cup. In2005–06,she was a member of Team Bath team that won the inaugural Netball Superleague title. Mentor was Player of the Match in theGrand Finalwhen Team Bath retained the title in2006–07.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
Adelaide Thunderbirds
editIn2008,Mentor was one of severalEngland internationalsto join theANZ Championship.Mentor signed forAdelaide Thunderbirds.[17][18][19][20][21]In2010,she was a member of the Thunderbirds team that won thepremiership.She finished the2010season asANZ Championship Grand Final MVP.[22][23][24]
Surrey Storm
editMentor played withSurrey Stormduring the2009–10 Netball Superleague season.In September 2009 herself andSonia Mkolomabecame the first two players to sign for the rebranded franchise. In March 2010, both Mentor and Mkoloma left Surrey Storm to return to theANZ Championship.[25][26][27][28]
Melbourne Vixens
editBetween2011and2016,Mentor played forMelbourne Vixensin theANZ Championship. [29][30][31]In2012she was a member of the Vixens team that were both minor premiers and grand finalists. She was subsequently included in the2012 ANZ Championship All Starteam and was named Vixens' Best and Fairest.[32][33][34]In2013,Mentor was again included in the All Star team.[35][36]In2014,Mentor made her 100th ANZ Championship appearance inRound 13againstAdelaide Thunderbirds.Mentor became the first import player to reach 100 games.[37][38]She subsequently helped Vixens win the2014 ANZ Championship[39][40][41]and was named in a third successive All Star team. [42][43]In 2014 when the Vixens' Best and Fairest award was renamed theSharelle McMahon Medal,Mentor became the inaugural winner. In2015she shared the award withKaryn Bailey.[41][38][44][45]
Sunshine Coast Lightning
editIn 2016 it was announced that Mentor had signed forSunshine Coast LightninginSuncorp Super Netball.[46][47]In February 2017, she was named captain of the new franchise.[48]She subsequently captained the Lighting teams that won the2017and2018 Suncorp Super Netballtitles.[49][50][51]Mentor was named the 2017Suncorp Super Netball Player of the Year.[52][53]In 2017 and 2018, she was also named as the goalkeeper in theSuncorp Super Netball Team of the Year.[54][55]Mentor made her 150thANZ Championship/Suncorp Super Netball appearance in the2018 Round 5match againstAdelaide Thunderbirds.[56][57]

editSince2019,Mentor has played forCollingwood MagpiesinSuncorp Super Netball.[60][61]She was named Magpies co-captain ahead of the 2019 season, alongsideMadi Robinson.[62]In both 2019 and2020,Mentor was awarded the Magpies' best and fairest award.[63][64]In2020,Mentor was named as the goalkeeper in theSuncorp Super Netball Team of the Yearfor a third time.[65]Mentor made her 200thANZ Championship/Suncorp Super Netball appearance in the2021 Round 10match againstGiants Netball.[64][66][67][68][69]

editMentor was first selected for the seniorEnglandsquad in November 2000 when she was aged 15. She was initially spotted byLyn Gunsonand her ability was recognised by England coaches, Julie Hoornweg andWai Taumaunu.She made her senior debut on 11 July 2001, aged 16, againstNew Zealand.On her debut she markedIrene van Dyk.[3][4][5][7]In2002,Mentor featured at her firstCommonwealth Gamesand in2003she played at her firstNetball World Cup.She was subsequently a member of the England teams that won the bronze medals at the2006and2010 Commonwealth Gamesand at the2011,2015and2019 Netball World Cups.[2][70]She captained England at the2015 Netball World Cup.[71][72][73]Mentor was a prominent member of the England team that won the gold medal at the2018 Commonwealth Games.[70][74][75]In2019she was awarded theCBEfor her services to netball.[76][77][78][79]In Sept 2022 Geva was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Sport by The Chancellor of Chichester University. Also in Nov 2022 Geva was conferred her second Honorary Doctorate in Arts by The Chancellor of Bournemouth University, her home town. In Nov 2022 she officially opened The Geva Mentor Fitness Park, 'a free for all area' on the beachfront of Bournemouth. On 18 May 2023, Mentor announced her retirement from international netball following the conclusion of the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.

editIn 2012 Mentor began a relationship with Lachlan Crawford. The couple were married in December 2015, and in 2018 they divorced.[37][46][47][112][113][114][115][116]In 2019, Mentor had a relationship withMason Cox,theAustralian rules footballerwho plays for theCollingwood Football Club.[117][118]
Since 2015, Mentor has been a dualBritishandAustralian citizen.[113][116]
In 2019 Mentor released an autobiography,Leap: Making the jump to take netball to the top of the world.[117][119][120]
