Biography
editHashimoto is especially noted for the discovery ofJōdai Tokushu Kanazukai, which makes it clear thatOld Japanesemade more syllabic distinctions than later periods of the language. This discovery led him to hypothesize that Old Japanese had eightvowels, while modernJapanesehas only five.
