Name
editHualien County annals (Hoa liên huyện chí) record that the city was called "Kilai" (Chinese:Kỳ lai;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Kî-lâi) until the early twentieth century. This name refers to theSakirayaTaiwanese aboriginesand their settlement.[4]
After Taiwan came underJapanese rulein 1895 its governors sought to change the name because "Kilai" is pronounced the same as the Japanese word for "dislike"(Hiềm い,kirai). The name was eventually changed to Karen Harbour(Japanese:Hoa liên cảng,Hepburn:Karenkō).AfterWorld War IIthe incomingKuomintang-ledRepublic of Chinaretained theKanjispelling but shortened the name to justKaren(Hoa liên),orHualienviaChinese romanization.

In 1940, the town was upgraded to Karenkō City,Karenkō Prefecture.
