The school was established in 1954 and named after the historical novelIvanhoebySir Walter Scott,part of which was set atAshby de la Zouch Castle.[3]
It was previously acommunitymiddle schoolwithspecialisttechnology collegestatus.[4]In July 2012 Ivanhoe College converted toacademy status.[5]In September 2022 the school expanded its age range to 16, becoming asecondary schoolY.[6]
