Career

edit

Williams was ordained in thePresbyterian Church in the United Statesin 1943 and served as a pastor for several years before becoming a full-time educator.[3]

From 1959-1972, he served as professor of systematic theology atAustin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.[4]As a key figure in the burgeoningcharismatic movementof the 1960s, he was president of the International Presbyterian Charismatic Communion, and later a participant in the International Roman Catholic–Pentecostal Dialogue. In 1972, he became the founding president of the Melodyland School of Theology inAnaheim,California, and in 1985 he served as president of theSociety for Pentecostal Studies.[3]In 1982, he joined the faculty ofRegent University, where he taught for eighteen years. Upon his retirement in 2000, Regent University established in his honor an endowed chair in Renewal Theology.[2]

Important works include the three-volumesystematic theologyentitledRenewal Theology(1988–1992, published as a single volume in 1996). This monumental work was the first complete systematic theology written from a Charismatic perspective. It included chapters on thesupernatural gifts of the Spiritand a chapter on theBaptism of the Holy Spirit, arguing for the traditionalPentecostalinterpretation. He also argued for theArminianview of the possibility ofapostasy.[5]

Williams was a strong defender ofspeaking in tongues, writing in 1978, "When a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues is a normal occurrence; normal, yet super-natural and belonging to the realm of signs and wonders...Since this prayer language comes from the Holy Spirit, it is a pure and holy language, regardless of the speaker's imperfection. It is, in my estimation, the noblest language this side of heaven."[6]
