Early life

Clayton was raised inSan Diego,California.Her father, Howard Clayton, was acriminal defense attorney,and her mother, Shelley, is anevent planner.When she was 19, Clayton moved toNew York Cityto pursue a career as amakeup artist.[3][4][5]

Career

In 2010, Clayton was the makeup artist and co-host onVH1's first makeover showTRANSform Me.[6][7][8]The following year she played the recurring role of Kyla in the third season of theHBOseriesHung.In 2012, Clayton played the lead role of Michelle Darnell on theEmmy Awardwinning interactive web seriesDirty Workand the role of Carla Favers on the TV seriesAre We There Yet?[9][10][11]She also narrated theaudiobookfor thechildren'snovelMelissaabout a young transgender girl.[12]

Clayton starred as one of the eight main characters in theNetflixoriginal television seriesSense8that premiered on June 5, 2015.[13]InSense8,she played Nomi Marks, a trans woman, political blogger, and hacker living in San Francisco.[14]Clayton said that she was primarily interested inSense8because of the opportunity to play a transgender character written by filmmakersLilly and Lana Wachowskiand to be on set with them.[15]Being a fan of science fiction andJ. Michael Straczynskiin particular also attracted her to this project.[16]

Clayton appeared in the 2016 filmThe Neon Demon[17]and the 2017 thriller filmThe Snowman.[18]

In 2019, Clayton starred as Sasha Booker in thethird seasonof the Netflix'sDesignated Survivor.[19]

From 2019 through Season 3, Clayton starred inThe L Word: Generation Q,the sequel to theShowtimeoriginalThe L Word.[20]She also guest starred inThe CW’sRoswell: New Mexico.

In 2022, Clayton starred as 'The Priest', the antagonist inHellraiser.[21]
