Jesse Andrews(born September 15, 1982) is an American novelist and screenwriter. He co-wrote the screenplay for thePixarfilmLucaand wrote both thenoveland thefeature-film adaptationofMe and Earl and the Dying Girl.

Andrews was born and raised inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania,and is a graduate of bothSchenley High SchoolandHarvard University.[1]His family isJewish.[2]

He learned jazz in high school.[3]

He currently resides inBerkeley, California.[4]

Andrews'sdebut novel,Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,was published by Harry Abrams in 2012 and won that year'sCybils Awardfor Young Adult Fiction.[5]

The Haters(2016)

The Haterswas published byAmulet Booksin April 2016.[6]Andrews said that he was inspired by his own experience with road-travelling bands.[7]

In 2022,The Haterswas listed among 52 novels banned by theAlpine School Districtfollowing the implementation of Utah law H.B. 374, “Sensitive Materials In Schools."[8]

Screenwriting

Andrews's first produced screenplay was thefeature-film adaptationof his debut novelMe and Earl and the Dying Girl,which was directed byAlfonso Gomez-Rejonand produced byIndian Paintbrush.[9]It premiered at the 2015Sundance Film Festival,where it won both the Audience Award (U.S. – Dramatic) and the Grand Jury Prize (U.S. – Dramatic).[10]

He also wrote the adaptation ofDavid Levithan's novel,Every Day.The movieEvery Daywas directed byMichael Sucsyand starredAngourie Rice.

More recently, Andrews wrote the screenplay and story forPixar's animated filmLuca,withMike Jones.[11]

Andrews was revealed to be co-writing the screenplay for Pixar'sHopperswith directorDaniel Chong,set for release in 2026.[12]
