Jessica Gomes(born 25 September 1985) is an Australian model who appeared in theSwimsuit Issueof the American publicationSports Illustratedevery year from 2008 to 2015. She works extensively in Australia and Asia. Gomes was the featured spokesperson for Australian companyDavid Jones Limitedfrom 2013 to Dec 2019. She has also been a spokesperson for South Korean conglomeratesLG ElectronicsandHyundai.Gomes served as the face of theEstee Lauder/Sean Johnfragrance "Unforgivable".

Early life
editShe is the daughter of aPortuguesefather, Joe Gomes (who spent time in Paris), and aSingaporeanmother ofChinese descent,Jenny (who was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Singapore), who both moved to Australia in the 1970s.[2][3][4]She was born inSydneyand raised inPerth[2][5]in a semi-rural environment[3]as the youngest child in her family, with two older sisters and an older brother.[2]
Career
editGomes's mother sent her to modelling classes at Linda-Ann Model Academy in the Perth suburb ofMidlandat the age of 13. There her acting led to a modeling contest and the start of her career.[6]In 2004, she signed withIMG Modelsafter moving toNew York City.[3]She has avoided Paris and Milan and worked extensively in most of Asia's major markets — including Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai — where she feels mixed heritage models are more successful.[3]According to Diane Smith, senior editor of theSports IllustratedSwimsuit Issue, she is regarded as a "nontraditional" beauty and in her Australian homeland she is regarded for her multiracial background.[3]
Gomes has enjoyed much success through South Korean advertising campaigns.[7]In 2007 she appeared in advertisements forHyundai Sonata.The following year, she appeared in an advertisement forLG Cyon Bikini Phone,in which she promoted thesplit screencellphone wearing a two-piece bikini, under thetagline"Touch the Wonder." This ad campaign is credited as having pushed Gomes to stardom in South Korea.[8]Her popularity grew, and by 2013 between her spokesmanships and Korean television show appearances, she had reached celebrity status.[9][10]

In 2008, she was part of a record group of seven "rookie" Swimsuit Issue models, along withQuiana Grant,Melissa Haro,Yasmin Brunet,Melissa Baker, Jeisa Chiminazzo andJarah Mariano.[27]That year, she was featured in abodypaintinglayout as a canvas for body-paint artistJoanne Gair.[27]By the time of her fifth consecutive Swimsuit issue, she had surpassed all models of Asian heritage.[3]
Acting
editThe modeling school in Midland where Gomes attended was also a child casting agency and in 1997, Gomes, along with many other students of the school, appeared as extras in the Australian miniseriesThe adventures of the Bush Patrol.[6][3]
While she lived in New York City, she studied at theStella Adler Studio of Acting.[8]Her Chinese-Portuguese heritage has contributed to her popularity in the Asian market,[7]and in 2009, her reality TV-showMy Name Is Jessica Gomeswas launched on the English language South Korean television network On Style owned byOn-Media.In the shows second season it chronicled her time in New York.[3]
She made her dancing debut in the Korean version ofDancing with the Starson 10 June 2011.[28][29]She placed third that season.[3]In 2012, Gomes appeared in the 14th episode of the7th cycleofGermany's Next Topmodel,assisting the candidates how to do jumping poses in fashion editorials.

editOne of Gomes' sisters, Bianca, was a successful model in Australia and overseas before Jessica began modeling seriously.[4]She counts AustralianElle Macphersonand Chinese-born modelChina Machado,the latter of whom was the first model of colour to appear on the cover of an American fashion magazine, as her role models.[3]She dined with Perth native and friendHeath Ledgerin New York the day before he died.[3]
In 2005, Gomes moved toNew York Cityand was a flatmate ofGemma Ward.[4]She formerly attendedLa Salle College.[4]She continued to live in New York at the time of her Swimsuit Issue debut in 2008 and as late as 2011.[34][7]
From 2016 to 2018, Gomes was in a relationship withXavier Samuel.[35]
