Toriumi was born in the northernJapanese prefectureofHokkaidō.After trying his hand at live-action atNikkatsu,he began writing animation scripts atMushi ProductionsforMighty Atom(Astro Boy) in 1964. He went on to devote himself full-time to television atTatsunoko Productionin 1965. He contributed toCasshern,TekkamanandTime Bokan.He later began writing for suchSunriseworks asArmored Trooper VOTOMS,Yoroiden Samurai Troopers(Ronin Warriors),Mister Ajikko.He also wrote the novel versions ofGatchaman,Shin HeiyōdenandDororo,as well as theAnime Scenario Nyūmon(The Introduction to Anime Scriptwriting).
He used theAnime Scenario Nyūmonbook when he became a vocational school teacher for future generations of scriptwriters. He also chaired Ohtori Koubou, a support organization for scriptwriters. He received the (Scenario) Scriptwriting Award from the Japan Writers Guild on May 26, 2000.[1]
Death
editOn January 17, 2008, he succumbed toliver cancerin aTokyohospital, aged 78. He was survived by his wife, Kazuyo.[1]
