John Scott Jr.(born December 15, 1975) is anAmerican footballcoach and former player. He was most recently the defensive line coach for theDetroit Lionsin 2023. Scott played professionally for theGreensboro Prowlersof theAF2and theMontreal Alouettesof theCFLbefore entering the collegiate coaching ranks.[1]

Playing career
editHigh school
editScott played forGreer High SchoolinGreer, South Carolina.He graduated in 1995 after playing on the 1994 state championship team.[2]
College
editScott lettered atWestern Carolinaat thedefensive endposition for four years from 1995 to 1998.[3]In 1997, Scott led all defensive linemen in tackles, and was a second team All-Southern Conferenceselection. Scott graduated with aBachelor's degreein communications in 2000.
Professional
editFollowing his graduation from Western Carolina, Scott played three years of professional football. From 2000 to 2001, Scott played for theGreensboro Prowlersof theAf2league and was named the team's defensive player of the year in 2000. In 2003, Scott participated in preseason camp for theCanadian Football League'sMontreal Alouettes.[3]
Coaching career
editScott entered the coaching ranks in 2001 as a defensive line coach at West Davidson High School inTyro, North Carolina.Following that, Scott accepted a graduate assistant position atLouisiana–Lafayettewhile earning a master's degree from 2002 to 2004. Subsequently, Scott spent one year as the defensive line coach forNorfolk Statebefore returning to hisalma materWestern Carolina to coachdefensive endsand outsidelinebackers.He spent three seasons at Western Carolina before spending the 2009 season as the defensive ends coach forMissouri State.[3]
After his stint at Missouri State, Scott accepted a position as the special teams and defensive line coach forGeorgia Southernfor three seasons. During his time with the Eagles, Scott mentored Brent Russell, who was anAll-Americanall three seasons under him and finished as the program's all-time sack leader. Scott also influenced All-American Roderick Tinsley anAll-Southern Conferenceselection John Douglas during his three seasons inStatesboro.[4][5]
In January 2013, Scott was hired as the defensive line coach forTexas Techunder head coachKliff Kingsbury.[6]During his two seasons with the Red Raiders, Scott mentoredAll-Big 12,Kerry HyderandBranden Jackson.[5]
New York Jets
editScott was hired by theNew York Jets,under head coachTodd Bowles,as a defensive quality control coach on February 11, 2015.[7]He was promoted to assistant defensive line coach on February 9, 2016.[8]
Arkansas Razorbacks
editScott was hired by theArkansas Razorbacksand head coachBret Bielemaas the new defensive line coach on February 7, 2017, replacing Rory Segrest.[9]He remained on staff in 2018.[10]
South Carolina Gamecocks
editOn January 22, 2019, it was announced by head coachWill Muschampthat Scott was hired as the new defensive line coach at theUniversity of South Carolina.[10]Under Scott Jr.'s guidance,Javon Kinlawwas named first-teamAll-SECby the coaches.[11]
Penn State Nittany Lions
editOn February 8, 2020, Scott was announced as the defensive line coach for thePenn State Nittany Lionsand head coachJames Franklin.[12]
Detroit Lions
