John Stachel(/ˈstætʃəl/;born 29 March 1928) is an Americanphysicistandphilosopher of science.
Biography
editStachel earned hisPhDatStevens Institute of TechnologyinPhysicsabout a topic inGeneral relativityin 1958. After holding different teaching positions atLehigh Universityand theUniversity of Pittsburgh,he went 1964 toBoston Universitywhere he was professor of physics until hisemeritation.
In 1977, Stachel became the first editor of theEinstein Papers Project,then atBoston University.The first two volumes (out of a projected twenty-five) ofThe Collected Papers of Albert Einsteinwere published during his tenure.
He is head of the Boston UniversityCenter for Einstein Studiesand, together withDon Howard,publishes the book seriesEinstein Studies.
Stachel also authored a text, entitledEinstein: From 'B' to 'Z'.[1]In 2005, he delivered theBritish Academy's Master-Mind Lecture.[2]
