Between 2019 and 2021, Hickman spearheaded the "Dawn of X",a relaunch of variousX-Men-related titles for which he provided the core storyline and concepts. This relaunch began theKrakoan Ageof which Hickman was the early main architect. This relaunch began with the duel comic book miniseriesHouse of X and Powers of Xwritten by Hickman.
In 2023, Hickman also helped spearhead the relaunch of theUltimate Universe,kicked off with the four-issue miniseriesUltimate Invasion,and since 2024, he is writing a rebootedUltimate Spider-Man.
As part of his Marvel work, Hickman co-created the characters of theBlack Orderand its members,Ebony Maw,Corvus Glaive,Proxima Midnight,Black Dwarf,andSupergiant.
Early life
editJonathan Hickman was born and raised inSouth Carolina.He graduated from South Florence High School inFlorence, South Carolina.[2]After high school, Hickman earned a degree in Architecture.[3]
Career
editBefore breaking into comics, Hickman worked in the fields of Web and CD-ROM development and later, advertising.[3]Between 2006 and 2008, Hickman published his debut comic book seriesThe Nightly News[4]andPax Romana,[5]both of which he wrote, drew, colored and lettered, throughImage.Soon after, he was invited to write forMarvel,and, in 2009, Hickman launched his first ongoing seriesSecret Warriorswhich followedNick Furyand a group of superpowered operatives as they undertook espionage operations in the wake of the company-wide crossover storyline "Secret Invasion".[6][7]The following year, Hickman wrote theS.H.I.E.L.D.limited series which detailed the secret history of theeponymous spy organizationoperating within theMarvel Universe.[8][9][10][11]During this period, he continued to publish various creator-owned projects through Image:Transhumanwith artistJ. M. Ringuet,A Red Mass for Marswith artistRyan Bodenheim[12][13]andThe Red WingwithNick Pitarra.[14]
In 2009, Hickman began his run onFantastic Fourwith theDark Reign: Fantastic Fourlimited series, illustrated bySean Chen,[15][16]taking over the series proper with issue #570, drawn byDale Eaglesham.In the storyline "Three", which concluded inFantastic Four#587, theHuman Torchappeared to die stopping a horde of monsters from the other-dimensionalNegative Zone.[17][18][19]The series ended with the following issue and was relaunched as simplyFF.Hickman finished his run on theFantastic Fourand became the writer ofThe AvengersandThe New Avengersas part of theMarvel NOW!relaunch in late 2012.[20][21]Hickman's run on the titles spawned two company-wide crossover storylines, "Infinity"in 2013[22]and "Secret Wars"in 2015.[23]
After taking a leave from Marvel to focus on his long-form creator-owned titles, Hickman returned to the publisher for "Dawn of X",the 2019 relaunch of theX-Menfamily of titles, which began with theHouse of XandPowers of Xlimited series that laid out the newstatus quodeveloped by Hickman that would define theKrakoan Age.He subsequently wrote the coreX-Menseries while the creators of other titles worked closely under his supervision.[24][25]Hickman announced his departure from writingX-Menin August 2021.[26]
In August 2021, Hickman was among a group of creators with whom fellow comics writerNick Spencerformed a deal with the subscription-based newsletter platformSubstackto publishcreator-owned comicsstories, essays, and instructional guides on that platform. Hickman indicated that he would collaborate with artistsMike del MundoandMike Huddlestonand writerTini Howardon a new series,Three Worlds / Three Moons,which will give readers a behind-the-scenes look at the process ofbuilding a fictional universe.[27]
In February 2023 it was announced that Hickman would write the miniseriesUltimate Invasion,withBryan Hitchdoing artwork and the premise revolving aroundThe Makerattempting to bring back theUltimate Universe,the aftermath of which will lead to a brand new line of Ultimate Marvel comics, which Hickman is helping to spearhead. In September 2023, it was revealed that Hickman would writeUltimate Spider-Man,a relaunch ofUltimate Spider-Manin 2024, with Marco Checchetto serving as artist.[28][29][30]
In March 2023, it was announced that Hickman would work with artist Valerio Schiti on a brand new series at Marvel, entitledG.O.D.S., which involves a new character named Wyn teaming up withDoctor Strangein order to stop a new threat. Hickman mentioned that he wrote theseries bibleforG.O.D.S.alongsideHouse of Xwhen he first returned to Marvel.[31]
In April 2024, it was announced that Hickman andEsad Ribićwould reunite for the miniseriesAliensvs.Avengers,which pits Earth's mightiest heroes against theXenomorphs.The first issue debuted in August 2024.[32]
In May 2024, it was announced that Hickman would write a new miniseries starringWolverinewhich will be drawn by artistGreg Capullo.The miniseries, titledWolverine: Revengewill release its first issue in August 24, 2024 and will feature a red band version that will contain extra violence.[33][34]
