The municipality has a population of 4,079 (31 December 2023)[2]and covers an area of 1,066.42 square kilometres (411.75 sq mi) of which 199.25 km2(76.93 sq mi) is water.[1]Thepopulation densityis 4.7 inhabitants per square kilometre (12/sq mi).

The municipality is unilinguallyFinnish.The municipality ofLeivonmäkiwas consolidated with Joutsa on January 1, 2008.
