History

edit

The first population of this area was aFinnictribe called theMeshchyora, later assimilated byRussiansandTatars. The town was founded in 1152 by theVladimir-SuzdalrulerYuri Dolgorukiyas Grodets, then Gorodets Meschyorsky (Городец Мещёрский).[citation needed]It was included in theMishar Yurtdivision of theGolden Horde, but then was sold toMuscovy.

In 1376, the town was destroyed by theMongol, but was soon rebuilt asNovy Nizovoy(Новый Низовой). After theBattle of Suzdalin 1445 (in whichGrand Duke Vasily IIwas taken prisoner), the Meschyora lands were given toOluğ Möxämmäd,Khan ofKazan Khanateas a ransom for the sovereign's life.

In 1452, Great Duke Vasily II of theGrand Duchy of Moscowgave this town to Kazan princeQasim Khan, who served astribute inspectorof theGreat Horde, but then came to Russian service. By other accounts, Qasim and his brother Yosif fled from Kazan after losing their bid for the throne against their brotherMäxmüd.After 1471, the town was known asQasím city.It remained the capital ofQasim Khanateuntil 1681 when the khanate was re-absorbed into Russia.

A group of Tatars settled there in 15th century and are now known as QasimTatars. They speak the Mishar dialect, mixed with the Middle Tatar dialect of theTatar language. In the 19th century, it became known for itswaiters, who staffed many of theSt Petersburghotels.[11]
