Kenneth Jones(2 October 1927 – 25 April 1988) was a Britishconductorandcomposerof film and television music.[1]Among his work Jones was musical director for the television chat showAspel & Companyand wrote the scores for several comedy films.

Life and career

Jones was born inManchesterand began his music career as a studio arranger forNorrie Paramor,there he worked arranging music forThe Zombies,Jim Dale,andJonathan King.In the 1960s he established his own orchestra and began a career in film and television. He had earlier collaborated withDouglas Gamleyon several film scores includingFire Down Below,Tom ThumbandThe City of the Dead,and later wrote complete scores for films such asTwo-Way Stretch,Dentist in the Chairand its sequelDentist on the Joband in 1964 he was hired by theBBCto compose the music forSteptoe and Son,where he replacedRon Grainer(who had left the series to concentrate onDoctor Who).[1][2]

ForBBC Television,Jones composed and arranged the themes forIt's Marty,and the sitcomSykeswhich ran from 1972 until 1979.[3]Also in 1979, Jones conducted the United Kingdom entry at theEurovision Song Contestwhich was sung byBlack Lace.[4]Alyn Ainsworthhad served as conductor for the national final, but he was unable to attend the contest inJerusalem.Between 1984 and 1988 he served as musical director forAspel & Company,and from 1979 to 1988 for thePaul Daniels Magic Show.[5]

In 1979, Jones was picked up by rival stationITV,where he wrote and composed the theme tune and music to the sitcomOnly When I Laugh.[6]

Jones remained associated with music throughout the 1980s. He died in 1988 while on holiday in France.
