Founding Members

edit

The initial six main characters were chosen by the producers, from a list of potential candidates of 50 to 60 DC Comics teenage superheroes.[1]The criteria consisted of age, powers, personality, cultural icon status, and dynamics.[2]An additional regular, Zatanna, was introduced partway through the first season, and Rocket was added at the end of the first season.[1]

  • Nightwing / Robin I / Dick Grayson(voiced byJesse McCartney) - Designation: B01. Known as Robin throughout first season; Grayson was, though only 13,[3]the most experienced member of the team.[4]He does not possess any superpowers; however, he is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, tactician, and a technological genius. He repeatedly plays with the English language, particularly with words which cease to function without prefixes, such as "disaster" ( "aster" ), "overwhelmed" ( "whelmed" ), and "distraught" ( "traught" ). Batman had forbidden Robin from revealing his secret identity to the team, though Kid Flash was aware of it.[5]Later in the series, Dick assumes the identity of Nightwing and becomes the leader of the team.
  • Aquaman II / Aqualad / Kaldur'ahm[3](voiced byKhary Payton) - Designation: B02; later 27. In the first season, Kaldur'ahm (or "Kaldur" for short) was the 16-year-old leader of the team. His powers, channeled through the tattoos on his arms, are a mixture of Atlantean sorcery and science.[citation needed]He displays super strength, durability, as well as the ability to breathe and speak underwater, typical ofAtlanteans. He also possesses the ability to form hard water constructs through the use of his Atlantean water bearers and to generate electricity.[6]He was selected as the initial leader for the Team, but stated that he did not want to remain leader and wished to turn over leadership to Robin when he was ready, saying that it was his destiny to lead this team.[7]Later in the series, Kaldur learns that Black Manta is his father, infiltrates the Light to uncover the identity of their partner, enters a relationship with Wyynde, and assumes the Aquaman identity.
  • Kid Flash I / Wally West[8](voiced byJason Spisak) - Designation: B03. Wally is the nephew-in-law of Barry Allen, who gained his powers from an attempt to recreate the accident that gave him his powers.[5][9]Ava Dordi of thePalo Alto Voicenotes that Spisak "captures the lighthearted essence of Kid Flash well".[10]In the second season, Wally retires from superheroics and enters a relationship with Artemis. He returns to battle the Reach, but is killed by a Reach weapon.
  • Superboy / Kon-El / Conner Kent(voiced byNolan North) - Designation: B04, later D09.[citation needed]Superboy is a hybrid clone of Superman and Lex Luthor who was created byProject Cadmus. His hybrid nature inhibits hisKryptonianabilities, though Luthor gives him special patches that fully activate them.[11][7]Later in the series, Superboy and Miss Martian enter a relationship and eventually marry.
  • Miss Martian / M'gann M'orzz / Megan Morse[12](voiced byDanica McKellar) - Designation: B05. Miss Martian is Martian Manhunter's teenage niece,[13]as well as being an inexperienced superhero.[8]As a Martian, she possesses various abilities, includingtelekinesis, telepathy, and shapeshifting that enables her to become invisible and intangible.[5][14]It is later revealed that M'gann is aWhite Martianwho disguised herself as a Green Martian and modelled her human appearance after the eponymous protagonist of the television seriesHello, Megan!.Later in the series, Miss Martian and Superboy enter a relationship and eventually marry.
  • Tigress / Artemis / Artemis Crock[15](voiced byStephanie Lemelin) - Designation: B07. Artemis is the daughter of the supervillainsSportsmasterandHuntressand an archer who masquerades as Green Arrow's niece.[8][16][17][18]Artemis later assumes the Tigress identity to infiltrate the Light, and maintains it after being exposed.
