Lyndon Johnston(born December 4, 1961) is a Canadian formerpair skater.WithCindy Landry,he is the1989 Worldsilver medallist and 1990Canadian nationalchampion.

Johnston was born on December 4, 1961, inHamiota, Manitoba.[1]

Career

Johnston represented Hamiota Figure Skating Club.[1]

Partnership with Kunhegyi

In 1981, Johnston and his partner,Melinda Kunhegyi,won three international medals – silver at theNebelhorn Trophy,gold at thePrague Skate,and gold at theGrand Prix International St. Gervais.In 1982, they took silver at theSt. Ivel International.

During the 1983–1984 season, the pair won bronze at the1983 Skate America[2]and then silver at the 1984Canadian Championships.They placed 12th at the1984 Winter OlympicsinSarajevo,Yugoslavia.[1]

In their final season together, Kunhegyi/Johnston won silver at theEnnia Challenge Cupand Canadian Championships.[3]They placed fifth at the1985 World ChampionshipsinTokyo,Japan.

Kunhegyi/Johnston won three national titles infour skating,taking gold in 1982, 1984, and 1985.

In the 1985–1986 season, Johnston began competing withDenise Benning.The pair won several international medals, including bronze at the1985 NHK Trophy,bronze at the1985 Skate Canada International,silver at the1986 Skate America,and gold at the 1987St. Ivel International.At theCanadian Championships,they became three-time pair skating medallists (silver in 1986 and 1987, bronze in 1988) and three-timefour skatingchampions (1986–1988).

Benning/Johnston finished fifth at three consecutiveWorld Championshipsand sixth at the1988 Winter OlympicsinCalgary,Alberta,Canada.[1]

Partnership with Landry

Later in 1988, Johnston teamed up withCindy Landryfrom Quebec. The pair won silver at the1989 World Championshipsand gold at the 1990Canadian Championships.After placing 9th at the1990 World Championships,they both turned professional.

Johnston was inducted into theManitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museumin 1993.[4]
