Marelli Europe S.p.A.(formerlyMagneti Marelli S.p.A.) is a European subsidiary ofMarelli Holdingswhich develops and manufactures components for theautomotive industry.The firm is headquartered inCorbetta,Italy, and includes 86 manufacturing plants, 12 R&D centres, and 26 application centers in 19 countries,[3]with 43,000 employees and a turnover of 7.9 billion euro in 2016.[3]

History

Founded in 1919 asFabbrica Italiana Magneti Marelli(FIMM), a joint-venture betweenFiatand Ercole Marelli (1891–1993), an Italian electrical manufacturing company, the firm initially madeignition magnetosfor the automotive and aviation industries, with its first plant inSesto San Giovanninear Milan.

It was a subsidiary of FIAT (nowStellantis) from 1967 onwards.

On 22 October 2018, FCA announced that Magneti Marelli was being bought byKKR,to be merged with the Japanese automotive companyCalsonic Kanseifor $7.2 billion, a deal that would create one of the world's largest auto parts suppliers.[4][5]

In May 2019, Magneti Marelli andCalsonic Kanseimerged to form Marelli.[2]

As of 2019,Magneti Marelli deals with intelligent systems for active and passive vehicle safety, and withpowertrainsystems. Business lines includeautomotive lightingsystems, body control systems, powertrain control systems,electronicinstrument clusters, telematics systems, and computers,suspensionsystems and components,exhaust systems,andmotorsport,wherein Magneti Marelli develops specific electronic systems forFormula One,[6]Grand Prix motorcycle racingand theWorld Rally Championship.[needs update]

Magneti Marelli worked withFord Motor Companyand Microsoft (Windows Embedded Automotive,formerly Microsoft Auto), to develop an in-dash computer (carputer) for Ford's work truck division introduced in 2008, with a built-in 6.5-inch, high-resolution touch screen andBluetooth,USBconnectivity,GPS navigation,voice recognition,and general office applications, e.g., word processing, contact, and calendar.[7] In 2023, Magneti Marelli fired 140 worker at its Niehl plant near Cologne, Germany.
