Marat Akbarov(Russian:Марат Фагимович Акбаров,born February 3, 1961)[1]is a former competitivepair skaterfor theSoviet Union.WithVeronica Pershina,he is the 1985Europeanbronze medalist and 1979World Juniorchampion.

Career
editAkbarov began skating in 1968 at the Lokomotiv Skating Club in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) with coach Alexander Rogin.[1]He teamed up withVeronica Pershinain 1975.[1]The pair moved to Moscow in 1978 to train withStanislav Zhuk.[1]They won the World Junior title in 1979 ahead ofLarisa Selezneva/Oleg Makarov.[2]
In 1980, Pershina/Akbarov made their senior World Championship debut, placing 6th. The following season, they won the Soviet national title ahead ofIrina Vorobieva/Igor Lisovski.The pair changed coaches toIrina Rodninain 1982.[1]
Pershina/Akbarov were gold medalists at the 1982Prize of Moscow Newsand 1983NHK Trophy.In 1985, they were sent to their fourthEuropean Championshipsand won the bronze medal.[3]They took silver at theSkate Canada Internationalin their final season.
After retiring from competition, Akbarov performed with the Russian All Stars under the direction ofTatiana Tarasova,before becoming a coach. He coaches at the Wheaton Ice Skating Academy inWheaton, Maryland.[1]

editAkbarov married fellow pair skaterMarina Pestova,with whom he has a daughter, Angela.
