Nelson Boyd(February 6, 1928, Camden, New Jersey – October 1985[1]) was an Americanbebopjazzbassist.

Biography

He was born inCamden, New Jersey,and played in local orchestras inPhiladelphiaaround 1945, and then moved toNew York Cityin 1947. While there, he played withColeman Hawkins,Tadd Dameron,andDexter Gordon,and later withSarah Vaughan,Dizzy Gillespie,andCharlie Barnetin 1948. In 1947, he recorded withFats NavarroandCharlie Parker,later withJay Jay JohnsonandMiles Davison Davis'sBirth of the Coolsessions in 1949. In addition, Davis's song "Half Nelson"was named after Boyd because of his height.[citation needed]

After 1949, he often played with Gillespie and toured theMiddle Eastwith him in 1956. Later, he recorded withMelba Listonin 1958 with her trombone ultimates onMelba Liston and Her 'Bones.He also did sessions withMax RoachandThelonious Monk.Boyd's last recordings were in 1964.
