New York Bay is usually divided into two major components, which are connected bythe Narrows.They areUpper New York BayandLower New York Bay.

The termNew York Harborusually refers to Upper New York Bay and the surroundingPort of New York and New Jersey,but sometimes is taken to be a synonym for New York Bay.

Upper New York Bay includes several islands.Liberty Islandis the location of theStatue of Liberty.NearbyEllis Islandis known as a former immigration station.Governors Islandis a former military base, now a park and historic site.Robbins Reef Lightis also in the upper bay. Lower New York Bay includesHoffman Islandand nearbySwinburne Island.Both are artificial islands that are closed to the public.

Commissioned by KingFrancis I of France,the Florentine explorerGiovanni da Verrazzanois the firstEuropeanto discover the Bay in 1524. He gave it the name ofNew Angoulême,in honor of the King who was alsoCount of Angoulême.[1]
