The Gazettewas founded in 1854 as theNiagara Falls Gazette.[2]

The Gazettewas owned byGannettfrom 1954 to 1997. Gannett was formed in 1923 byFrank Gannett,a notedconservative,[3]inRochester, New Yorkas an outgrowth of a newspaper business he had begun inElmira, New Yorkin 1906.[4]

In a 1996 deal, that closed in 1997, Gannett acquired Buffalo'sWGRZ.[5]Due toU.S. Federal Communications Commissionregulations, Gannett was required to sell the paper.[5]It was bought byCommunity Newspaper HoldingsInc., along with other area newspapers such as theLockport Union-Sun & Journaland the formerTonawanda News.[6]
