Papua and New Guinea Act 1949

ThePapua and New Guinea Act 1949was an Act passed by theParliament of Australia.It replaced thePapua Act 1905and theNew Guinea Act 1920,and changed the status of the territories ofPapuaandNew Guineaby merging their administrations to formPapua and New Guinea.[1]The Act established local rule, although the territory remained under control byAustralia.[2]The Act was repealed by thePapua New Guinea Independence Act 1975which allowed forPapua New Guinea's independence from Australia.[3]
