They may be played to pass the time, as icebreakers, or forbrain training.[1]In recent times, they have been supplanted bymobile games.[2]Some popular examples of pencil-and-paper games includetic-tac-toe,sprouts,dots and boxes,hangman,MASH,paper soccer,andspellbinder.[3]The term is unrelated to the use inrole-playing gamesto differentiatetabletop gamesfromrole-playing video games.
Board gameswhere pieces are never moved or removed from the board once being played, particularlyabstract strategy gameslikeGomokuandConnect Four,can also be played as pencil-and-paper games.[4]
