Paper-and-pencil gamesorpaper-and-pen games(or some variation on those terms) aregamesthat can be played solely withpaperandpencils(or otherwriting implements), usually without erasing. They may be played to pass the time, as icebreakers, or forbrain training.[1]In recent times, they have been supplanted bymobile games.[2]Some popular examples of pencil-and-paper games includetic-tac-toe,sprouts,dots and boxes,hangman,MASH,paper soccer,andspellbinder.[3]The term is unrelated to the use inrole-playing gamesto differentiatetabletop gamesfromrole-playing video games.
Board gameswhere pieces are never moved or removed from the board once being played, particularlyabstract strategy gameslikeGomokuandConnect Four,can also be played as pencil-and-paper games.[4]
