Thepigo[3](Rutilus pigus) is a species of freshwater fish in the roach genusRutilusof the familyCyprinidae.[1]The fish is native to northernItalyandSwitzerland.It inhabits subalpine lakes of the northernAdriaticbasin from theLivenzato thePo drainage,including LakesMaggiore,Lugano,andComo.[4]

That region is inhabited by the closely relatedRutilus virgo( "cactus roach" ), which until recently was considered to be the same species asR. pigus,or its subspeciesR.np. virgo.R. virgois widespread from theIron Gateupstream.[4]
