Pitunais agenusoffishin thefamilyRivulidae.These annualkillifishareendemicto seasonal pools, swamps and lagoons in theAraguaiaTocantins,Xingu,uppermostParanáandParanaíbariver basins in Brazil. Most are from savanna regions, butP. xinguensisis from theAmazon rainforest.[2][3]

They are small fish, up to 4.5 cm (1.8 in) instandard length.[4]Males are overall brownish with a spotted greenish-golden,turquoiseor blue pattern, and a blue-black spot at theoperculum.Females are far duller.[2]
