Martínez, who trained in theHuracányouth system, debuted with Huracán's first team in the2011–12 season.While at the club, he won his firstCopa Argentinain 2014.

River Plate

Martínez joinedRiver Platein January 2015. Martínez made his club debut on 16 February 2015 againstClub Atlético Sarmientoin a 4–1 away win.[2]On 25 April 2015, his former teamHuracánbeat River Plate for theSupercopa Argentinatitle. In the Copa Libertadores, Martínez played in the quarter-final first leg matchagainstBoca Juniors,a matchRiver Platewould go on to win. Martínez won two moreCopas Argentinasin a row, in2016and2017.Martínez added twoRecopa Sudamericanas,in2015and2016.Martínez also won twoCopas Libertadores,in2015and2018,as well as oneSuruga Bank Championship in 2015,in which he scored in River's 3–0 win overGamba Osaka.[3]He was instrumental in obtaining his firstSupercopa Argentinatitle against Boca in2017.

On 9 December 2018, Martínez scored his side's third goal to seal a 3–1 win, 5–3 aggregate victory, over Boca Juniors in the second leg of theCopa Libertadoresheld atReal Madrid'sBernabéu Stadium.[4]Following the victory, he announced that he would be joiningMLSsideAtlanta Unitedafter theFIFA Club World Cup,as the club had met his $17 million release clause.[5]

On 24 January 2019, Martínez's transfer toMajor League SoccersideAtlanta Unitedwas confirmed.[6]On 12 May 2019, Martínez scored his first goal for Atlanta United during a 1–0 victory againstOrlando City.[7][8]He scored the game winner in theU.S. Open Cupfinal victory overMinnesota Unitedon 27 August.[9]

Al-Nassr

On 7 September 2020, Martínez joinedSaudi Professional LeaguesideAl-Nassrfor a reported transfer fee of $18 million.[10][11]

Return to River Plate

On August 24, 2023, River Plate announced that it had re-signed Martinez.[12]

International career

On 8 September 2018, Martínez made hisArgentina national teamdebut in a 3–0 victory overGuatemala.[13]He started the match, scored from the penalty spot after a handball byElías Vásquezmidway through the first half, and was replaced byFranco Vázquezin the 56th minute.[14]

Personal life

His nickname,Pity,refers to thewren( "pititorra" ), from his native homeland ofGuaymallén,inMendoza,Argentina. He was given the nickname at the age of five, and does not respond to his given name, Gonzalo.[15]
