Introduction


North Rhine-Westphalia(German:Nordrhein-Westfalen[ˈnɔɐ̯tʁaɪnvɛstˈfaːlən],usually shortened toNRW,official short form NW) is the westernmost, most populous, and economically most powerfulstateofGermany.The state was formed in 1946, by merger of two rather distinct territories of the historicFree State of Prussia:theRhine Provinceand theProvince of Westphalia.The formerFree State of Lippewas joined in 1947.

North Rhine-Westphalia is situated "deep in the West" of Germany and includes the plains of theLower Rhineregion and parts of theCentral Uplands(Mittelgebirge) up to the gorge ofPorta Westfalica.The state comprises a land area of34,083 km²(13,158 square miles) and shares borders withBelgiumin the southwest and theNetherlandsin the west and northwest. It has borders with the German states ofLower Saxonyto the north and northeast,Rhineland-Palatinateto the south andHesseto the southeast.

North Rhine Westphalia has a population of approximately 18 million inhabitants, and is centred around the polycentricRhine-Ruhrmetropolitan region,which includes the formerly industrialRuhrregion and the Rhenish cities ofBonn,Cologne(Köln) andDüsseldorf.30 of the80 largest cities in Germanyare located within North Rhine-Westphalia. The state's capital is Düsseldorf, the state's largest city is Cologne.

As the most urbanised federal state in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia possesses the country's highest density of cultural, educational and research institutions, the densest transport infrastructure and the highest number of multinational corporations. North Rhine-Westphalia contributes about 22% to Germany'sgross domestic productand accounts for about 28% of the country'sforeign direct investments.[1]

Herbert Grönemeyer(born April 12, 1956) is aGermanmusicianandactor,popular inGermany,AustriaandSwitzerland.He starred as war correspondent Lieutenant Werner inWolfgang Petersen's movieDas Boot,but later concentrated on his musical career. His fifth albumBochum(1984) and his 20th albumMensch(Human) (2002) are the best-selling German-language records of all time.

Grönemeyer often refers to his personal roots as lying in the German city ofBochumwhere he spent most of his childhood, youth and early adulthood.
