TheRed Tilson Trophyis awarded annually by theOntario Hockey Leagueto the most outstanding player (MVP) as voted by OHL writers and broadcasters. It was donated byThe Globe and Mail,and first awarded in the1944–45 OHA seasonby theOntario Hockey Association.[1][2]The trophy is named for Red Tilson, who played for theOshawa Generals,and died during military service in World War II. Winners of the Red Tilson Trophy are nominated for theCHL Player of the Yearaward. The Red Tilson trophy resides in the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame, in theTribute Communities Centre.[3]

editThe trophy is named forAlbert"Red"Tilson,(January 13, 1924 – October 27, 1944)[4]a formerOshawa Generalsplayer killed in service inWorld War II.[1][2][5][6]Tilson was born inRegina, Saskatchewanto William and Mary Tilson.[4]He was nicknamed "Red" for his hair colour.[5]He played two seasons for the Generals beginning with the1941–42 OHA season,and won theJ. Ross Robertson Cupboth seasons. Tilson won theEddie Powers Memorial Trophyin the1942–43 OHA seasonas the top scorer in the league with 19 goals, and 38 assists.[1]Tilson enlisted in theCanadian Armed Forceson May 27, 1943 atKingston, Ontario.Tilson was alance corporalinThe Queen's Own Rifles of CanadaR.C.I.C.[4]Tilson was killed in action in the Netherlands, on October 27, 1944.[4]Tilson is interred in the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery, nearMaldegem,Belgium.[4]The Generals retired his uniform #9 on November 12, 2006.[3]
