Early life

Born in London and originally named Iqbal Amin, Shazad Latif is of mixedPakistani,English andScottishdescent.[1]He grew up inTufnell Park,North London.His father was Javed Iqbal, a Pakistani.[2]Shazad studied at theBristol Old Vic Theatre Schooland performed in many stage productions includingKing Lear,playing Cornwall, and Richard Sheridan's comedySchool for Scandal,as Joseph Surface. He left the school a year early to take up his role inSpooks.[3]

Spookswas his first major role on television, as the highly skilled technician and data analyst Tariq Masood.[3][4]He appeared in all series ofToast of Londonas the recurring character Clem Fandango,[5]one of the studio staff recording the voice of lead character Steven Toast (Matt Berry).

In 2016, he joined the cast ofPenny Dreadfulas the literary characterDr. Jekyll.[6]

In 2017, Latif was cast in the role of Lieutenant Ash Tyler inStar Trek: Discovery.[7]After initially being announced as playing a human,[8]it was later revealed that Latif had also portrayed the Klingon Voq in the series, credited under his late father's name to conceal a relatedplot twist.[2]

Shazad Latif played ISIS fighter Bilel in the 2018 thriller filmProfilebyTimur Bekmambetov.The film takes place entirely on computer screens. It premiered at the68th Berlin International Film Festivalwhere it won the Panorama Audience Award.

Latif playedCaptain Nemoin the live-action seriesNautilus,released on Amazon Prime Video in 2024.[9][10]
