Name
editI've been contacted byUser:143.117.233.224regarding the title of this page. He provided me two sources pointing to the spelling as McClean. Neither however is conclusive as they only note the surname, so it could be another player. The sources linked to me were[1]and[2].SnowolfHow can I help?20:45, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
The 1st source has his full name mentioned 2 times in the article, with McClean mentioned twice on its own.
I don't know if you accept facebook, but here is his actual facebook page also:
Thanks 143.117.233.224(talk) 20:52, 18 April 2010 (UTC)--143.117.233.224(talk)20:52, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- I was originally involved in this page and was asked by Snowolf to have a say here. I did see conflicting references to this spelling but previously was convinced it was McLean by the BBC:
- http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/irish/8625894.stm
Amongst others
- http://www.soccerpunter.com/soccer-statistics/ireland/ireland-1st-division-2010/team_info_overall/Derry_City
- http://eurorivals.net/players/james-mclean:derry-city.html
However the BBC changes its mind - for example:
To me the most authoritative source would be the local paper which uses McLean
- http://www.derryjournal.com/derry/Impressive-Derry-too-good-for.6071808.jp
- http://www.derryjournal.com/derry/Derry-share-spoils-with-Rebel.6131746.jp
But also uses McClean
- http://www.derryjournal.com/derry/MervuelousPerformance.6222372.jp
- http://www.derryjournal.com/derry/Teenage-Terrors.6232821.jp
Do we assume the official league sponsors would have it right? McLean
McClean
Even RTE have used both versions in the same article:
Ridiculous... this site also has both spellings in the same article:
I guess if it is actually his Facebook page then that might settle it... because at this point I have no idea... I am leaning back towards McClean.
SeanMack(talk)16:27, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
I think this part should come into a personal section:
McClean, an Irish national, has been quick to correct those who mistakenly claim he is "Northern Irish".[1][16][17].And maybe removemistakenly.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by86.153.139.153(talk)20:25, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Updating
editIf you are going to lock the page, could you at least update his stats, whenever he makes a PL appearance? It's ridiculous.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by86.46.135.72(talk)17:43, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Place Of Birth

Non-neutral section removed
editI have removed one obviously politically charged section from the article:[3].It's not up to us to decide whether people are mistaken to think something like this. This paragraph should be rewritten, andonly thencan it be included.83.80.18.68(talk)16:54, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- And how did you find this NPOV? We didnt decide anything its about actuall events. Three cites, if you want it removed you should be able to show why. I have re-added. If you think you can rephrase it better please do. Also BRD edit if it gets reverted discuss then editafterdiscussion not before or during.Murry1975(talk)17:11, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- We say here, as an undeniable statement of fact, that people "mistakenly claim" that McClean is Northern Irish. He was born in Northern Ireland and he has played for Northern Ireland youth teams, which means that he has UK citizenship. He may not self-identify as Northern Irish, true, but that doesn't make such claims a mistake. And if the claims are not a mistake, McClean can't have corrected them, as we say here. It should say something along the lines of "McClean identifies as Irish instead of Northern Irish. When Northern Irish BBC presenter Colin Murray described McClean as a countryman, McClean responded via Twitter:" Colin murray get it right will you its #irish ". That is the neutral way of putting it.83.80.18.68(talk)17:31, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry but this is similar to a discussion on Northern Irishhere, basically if someone self identifies one instead of other that is there choice and no-one, you or I included, can state or imply it should be the opposite. Feel free to voice your concerns over there, but the basic flow is if you are born in NI what ever you self identify gets used. There is nothing less political in your re-wording, the only difference is the allusion to the fact that heshouldbe Northern Irish, which in its self is just a political, and the adjective "quick".Murry1975(talk)17:46, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- You're wrong. The current wording decides who's right and who's wrong. My suggestion doesn't. Let's look at what I wrote. "McClean identifies as Irish instead of Northern Irish." Which is true, although it might be expanded to "McClean identifies as Irish instead of Northern Irish and has therefore opted to represent Ireland", since it is in the International career section. I said that "Northern Irish BBC presenter Colin Murray described McClean as a countryman". Which he did. And then I said that McClean responded via Twitter. Which he did. There's nothing political in my suggestion, and I'm very surprised that you managed to find any allusions anywhere. And where did you see that adjective?83.80.18.68(talk)17:58, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- McClean clearly identifies as Irish and there is no need to say that this is instead of anything.Bjmullan(talk)18:04, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- The allusion is to the incorrect fact that he should be Northern Irish. And yes Colin Murray was wrong and James McClean is right. You cant say otherwise without proof.Murry1975(talk)18:12, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- You're making two errors. 1: Where have I alluded that McClean should be Northern Irish? I haven't said anything like that anywhere, you're putting words into my mouth. What I have said is that we should state what A (Murray) says and how B (McClean) reacts. That's it. Beyond that we have to remain neutral. It's not our job to decide who is right and who is wrong. 2: BRD doesn't work that way. B was adding the sentence about McClean, R was me removing it, D was what the original poster should have done.83.80.18.68(talk)21:42, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Alluded "McClean identifies as Irish instead of Northern Irish and has therefore opted to represent Ireland" or "McClean identifies as Irish instead of Northern Irish", that is alluding bud. BRD, the edit was not new, the bold edit was removing the edit then. Consensus seems to with the table version. The use of "has been quick to correct" I would remove and just use "has corrected".Murry1975(talk)21:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

West Bromwich Albion:
The player is more commonly known as Salomon Rondon (with the diacritical marks on the penultimate letters in both names.
2016/17 looks like an odd way to type in a named season so that would be changed into 2016–17.
The 4-2 scoreline should have the hyphen replaced with a – to make it 4–2.

"James McClean... is [a Northern Irish] professional footballer..." should be changed to "James McClean... is [an Irish] professional footballer..." or "James McClean... [Born in Northern Ireland, he represented the Republic of Ireland national team.]"
The standard format on all other footballers' pages is to either display their nationality based on what national football team they played for (such as Achraf Hakimi or Antonee Robinson), or at least state the country of their birth and the national team they represent (such as Ademola Lookman or Tariq Lamptey). There is no logical reason for McClean's page to break from this pattern to state that he is Northern Irish...76.64.49.68(talk)14:34, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
