Teresa Mary Palmer[2](born 26 February 1986) is an Australian actress. A prominentscream queen,she is known for her roles inhorror films,as well as projects of other genres in both Australia and the United States.

Palmer began acting as a teenager in the early 2000s and had her film debut inWolf Creek(2005). The following year, her performance as a depressed teenager in the drama film2:37earned her acclaim and a nomination for theAACTA Award for Best Actress.She would later gain further nominations in the category, forMel Gibson'sHacksaw Ridge(2016),Berlin Syndrome(2017), andRide Like a Girl(2019). Early life

Palmer was born and raised inAdelaide,South Australia,the only child of Kevin Palmer, an investor, and Paula Sanders, a former nurse andmissionary.

Her parents separated when she was three, and divorced in 1992 when she was six.[3]She has a stepmother, Karen Palmer, as well as two half-sisters and three stepbrothers, who lived with her father.[4][5]Palmer stated toInterviewthat she "came from rather humble beginnings";[6]she lived inpublic housingwith her mother, while regularly visiting her father at his farm nearMylorin theAdelaide Hills(which she later purchased as an adult).[3][7][8]Palmer was named afterMother Teresaby her mother, and has stated that she had a "tough upbringing" due to her mother'smanic depression.[9][10]

Palmer was a student atMercedes College,aprivateCatholic day school,[11]and won a local-casting audition, "Search for a Movie Star," in 2003.[12]Her first acting job was dressing up as aStrawberry Shortcakedoll and as anelf assistantto mallSanta Clauseson weekends for promotions in shopping centres near Adelaide.[13][14]Palmer went to acting classes for a couple of years and appeared in severaltelevision commercials.[10]She was a fast-food attendant atHungry Jack'sinRundle Mallin 2005, before working at clothing retailersSupré,Mambo AustraliaandCotton On.[15][16][17]

After graduating from high school, Palmer thought that she would work in an animal rescue service, and eventually open her own animal welfare agency.[18]She was accepted into a university to study teaching and was taking a course on journalism, but had always dreamt of acting.[3][19]She got a call from an agent about appearing in a student film,2:37.[6]The director had seen herhead shoton the acting agency's website and wanted her to be in the movie. Palmer dropped out of the university to work on the film.[10]

Career

2005–2006: Beginnings in Australia

Palmer had been anextraonDeck Dogz(2005), and other films shot inAdelaide.[4][20]At the age of 18, she was cast by filmmakerMurali K. Thalluriin the independent Australian film2:37,[21]about a tragic highschool suicide.[6]She was nominated for the 2006Australian Film Institute Awardfor Best Lead Actress for her performance.[22]She then signed with a talent agent in Sydney.[4]A role in a pool party scene followed inWolf Creek(2005).

Palmer starred in the psychological thrillerRestraint,with English actorStephen MoyerandCalvin KleinmodelTravis Fimmel.Shot on location aroundNew South Walesin mid-2005, the film was written byDave Warnerand directed by David Denneen.[23]Palmer was named an Australian "star of tomorrow" byScreen Internationalthat year.[24]She then starred inDecember Boys,acoming-of-agefilm set in the 1960s, based on a novel byMichael Noonan.She played Lucy, who has a romance withDaniel Radcliffe's character in a remote beach town. Palmer studiedDominique Swain's performance inLolita(1997) to capture her character's overt sexuality.[25]The film began shooting in November 2005 on the south coast of Australia.[26]It was released on 14 September 2007 in the UK and US and 20 September 2007 in Australia[27]and received mixed reviews,[28]and failed at the box office.[29]

2:37premiered at the2006 Cannes Film FestivalinUn Certain Regardselection. The film received a standing ovation, a turning point for Palmer, giving her confidence in acting as a career. The trip to Cannes led her to meet her manager,David Seltzer,and American talent agents.[4][30]She signed with theWilliam Morris Agency.[31]

2006–2012: Move to Hollywood

Palmer was cast to star withTom Sturridgein her first American feature,Jumper,a science fiction film directed byDoug Liman.Her part was later recast when the lead characters were rewritten for older actors; her role went toRachel Bilson.[31]Palmer was devastated from losing the role and returned toAdelaidefor a few months.[10]She made her Hollywood feature film debut inThe Grudge 2in 2006, a horror sequel starringAmber TamblynandSarah Michelle Gellar.Palmer described her character, Vanessa, as "the bitchy schoolgirl."[25]The Grudge 2was released in North America on 13 October 2006 (Friday the 13th)[32]to negative reviews[33]and grossed $70 million worldwide against its $20 million budget.[34]

In early 2007, Palmer was cast as Tori Frederking in the comedyTake Me Home Tonight,starringAnna Faris,Dan FoglerandTopher Grace.[35]Set in the 1980s, the film was directed byMichael Dowseand released in March 2011.[25][36]Take Me Home Tonightwas abox officeflop, failing to recoup its $19 million budget.[37] Palmer starred in thefilm clipfor the 2007 single "Breaking Up,"by the bandEskimo Joe,shot inNewcastle.Palmer jumps into the sea with the band's singer,Kavyen Temperley.[38]

Palmer relocated fromSemaphore Beachin Adelaide to Los Angeles in May 2007 to further her career, and began auditioning for films. She stated that Los Angeles was "a big adjustment" and "very different" from her home in Australia.[25]She went through a period of loneliness and depression, and considered going back home until she made friends there.[10]

In November 2007, Palmer was cast as the villain,Talia al Ghul,in theDC Comicssuperhero film,Justice League: Mortal,alongsideD.J. Cotrona,Adam Brody,Anton Yelchin,CommonandMegan Gale.George Millerwas set to direct the film, but it was cancelled byWarner Bros.due to script rewrite issues and the2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.[39]

Palmer was the face of Sydney jeweller Jan Logan's "modern darling" collection in 2008.[16]She was picked that year byAdam Sandlerfrom an audition tape to play his love interest in theWalt Disney Pictureschildren's film,Bedtime Stories.[10]She played an heiress, Violet Nottingham, starring alongsideGuy PearceandCourteney Cox.Sandler also put Palmer's mother and best friend in scenes in the film.[40]It was released on 25 December 2008 and received to negative reviews[41]but grossed $212 million worldwide on its $80 million budget.[42]

Palmer won the romantic lead inDisney'sThe Sorcerer's Apprentice,produced byJerry Bruckheimerand directed byJon Turteltaub.The film was based on the relevant section of the animated filmFantasia(1940), which was set to a shortsymphonic poemfororchestrabyPaul Dukas,L'apprenti sorcier(The Sorcerer's Apprentice,published in 1897, and by far, the best known of Dukas' compositions), all of which were inspired by the eponymous poem byJohann Wolfgang von Goethe.[43]Palmer stayed inManhattan'sWest Villagewhile filming for six months.[44]She played Becky Barnes, a college student who is pursued by Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a physics student and apprentice to the wizard Balthazar (Nicolas Cage).[45]It was released on 14 July 2010 to mixed reviews,[46]and grossed $215 million worldwide on its big $150 million budget.[47]In July 2010,Parade Magazinenamed the film No. 1 on its list of "Biggest Box Office Flops of 2010 (So Far)".[48]

In 2009, Palmer formed the film production company Avakea Productions, with Australian actressesTahyna TozziandNathalie Kelley.She was a guest judge onMTV Australia,for the Sydney filmmaking talent contest,Optus one80project.[49]She also filmed an ad campaign that year for the Australian jean store,Just Jeans,and became the face and spokesperson for the Jurlique cosmetics company.[3][50]

In 2011, Palmer starred in the sci-fi adventure film,I Am Number Four,alongsideAlex PettyferandDianna Agron.She played Number Six, one of nine aliens hiding out on Earth because her home planet was destroyed. Her character was skilled in martial arts, rode aDucatimotorcycle, and could "phase" her way through solid objects. She went through stunt training for the role, learning to perform flips, sword fight, and dowirework.The film was adapted from a novel that was the first of a six-part series. Palmer signed on to do three movies, if the film became afranchise.[30]The film was released in theatres on 18 February 2011, and was also released in theIMAXformat.[51][52]It received generally negative reviews from critics[53]and grossed $149 million worldwide.[54]

Palmer was going to star inFury Road,a sequel to theMad Maxseries by Australian filmmaker George Miller, but didn't join the cast due to scheduling conflicts.[55][56]The film was later postponed.[57]Palmer starred in the short filmBear,directed byNash Edgerton,which competed at the2011 Cannes Film Festival.[58]

She appeared oppositeJoel Edgertonin the independent Australian drama-thriller,Wish You Were Here,directed byKieran Darcy-Smith.The film began shooting in Sydney in November 2010, and premiered at the2012 Sundance Film Festival.[20][59]The film received positive reviews from critics.[60]

She also starred in a comedic short,Quirky Girl,for the websiteFunny or Die,oppositeAaron Paul.[61]

2013–present: Further recognition and horror films

Palmer starred in the 2013zombiefilm,Warm Bodies,produced bySummit Entertainment,and based ona young adult novelby Isaac Marion.[62]She played Julie, a human who falls in love with a zombie (Nicholas Hoult).[63]It was released on 1 February 2013 in the United States and on 8 February 2013 in the United Kingdom. It opened to positive reviews[64]and grossed $116 million worldwide.[65]

In February 2013, Palmer was announced as the "global face" ofArtistrycosmetics.[66]Palmer then starred inLove and HonorwithLiam Hemsworth,an independent romance filmed in mid-2011 inAnn Arbor, Michigan.[67]The film is set in the 1960s during theVietnam War,and was released in March 2013.[68]It had a limited release on 22 March 2013, receiving negative reviews[69]and only grossed $19 thousand.[70]

In 2014, she co-starred alongsideJosh Hartnett,Rosario DawsonandPenn Badgleyin the romantic dramaParts per Billion.It was released onvideo on demandon 20 May 2014,[71]and on home video on 6 June 2014.[72]It received negative reviews from critics.[73][74]Palmer had two films that premiered at the2014 Toronto International Film Festival,[75]Cut Bank(2014) andKill Me Three Times(2015), both of which received negative reviews from critics.[76][77]She played the love interest toLiam HemsworthandBilly Bob Thornton's daughter inCut Bankand an assassin inKill Me Three TimesoppositeSimon Pegg,Alice BragaandLuke Hemsworth.The latter film was released on 10 April 2015. She starred withMelissa LeoandPhoebe TonkininThe Ever After,directed by her husbandMark Webber.Written by Palmer and Webber, it is a love story that explores the depths of marriage.

In 2015, she appeared in theTerrence Malick-directed filmKnight of Cups,starringChristian Bale.The film premiered in the main competition section at the65th Berlin International Film Festivalin February 2015.[78]Knight of Cupshas received mixed reviews from critics.[79]The film was released on 4 March 2016 in the United States byBroad Green Pictures.[80]Palmer had a supporting role in the 2015 remake ofPoint Break.The film was released in the U.S. on 25 December 2015[81]and was panned by critics.[82]

In October 2015, it was learned that Palmer would participate in a short film calledToo LegitwithZoe Kravitz,Clark Gregg,Nate CorddryandLauren Weedman.[83]This project was confirmed by the director of the film,Frankie Shawvia Twitter and Instagram and had its premiere on 23 January 2016 at theSundance Film Festival.[84]

In 2016, she played the female lead role in the adaptation of theNicholas SparksnovelThe Choice,alongsideBenjamin Walker,Tom Welling,Alexandra Daddario,andTom Wilkinson.[85]The film premiered on 5 February 2016 and was panned by critics.[86]She appeared alongsideCasey Affleckin the crime–dramaheist film,Triple 9(2016), directed byJohn Hillcoat.It was released nationwide on 26 February 2016.[87]It was met with mixed reviews and failed to impress at the box office.[88][89][90][91]Also that year, she portrayedRebeccain thehorror filmLights Out,[92]and co-starred in the war dramaHacksaw Ridge,playing the love interest ofAndrew Garfield's character; both films received positive reviews, with Palmer's performances being praised.[93][94]She co-starred in the filmMessage from the King,alongsideChadwick Boseman,Luke EvansandAlfred Molina.[95]

In 2017, Palmer starred in thepsychological thrillerBerlin Syndrome,alongsideMax Riemelt.She also starred alongsideMichiel HuismanandSam Reidin the science fiction thriller2:22.[96]

In 2018, Palmer began a starring role as Diana Bishop in the British supernatural drama seriesA Discovery of Witches.The series received positive reviews.[97]The following year, Palmer starred in the biographical sports filmRide Like a Girl,portrayingMichelle Payne.The film was directed by Palmer'sHacksaw Ridgeco-starRachel Griffiths,in her feature film directorial debut.[98]

Palmer will star alongsideBella HeathcoteandPhilippa Northeastin the television adaptation ofSally Hepworth's novelThe Family Next Doorfor the ABC. The six-part drama is being filmed in Victoria.[99]

Personal life

Palmer, along with Australian television presenterDavid Koch,was one of the twonumber-one ticket holdersof thePort Adelaide Football Clubstarting from 2009, having attended Port Adelaide games since childhood.[100]

Palmer began dating actor and directorMark Webberin late 2012 after contacting him viaTwitter.They became engaged in August 2013,[101]and married on 21 December 2013 in Mexico.[102]She and Webber have two sons and two daughters together.[103][104][105][106]Palmer is also a stepmother to Webber's son from his previous relationship with actressFrankie Shaw.[107]The family resides in theBeachwood Canyoncommunity of Los Angeles.[108]

In November 2012, Palmer and friendPhoebe Tonkinlaunched the health and wellness website Your Zen Life.[68]She co-founded a sister site to Your Zen Life called Your Zen Mama, with her friend, actressSarah Wright.[109][110]
